yeah, I see what you mean. it's really difficult to get a good balance of detail going when i can see what everything is in my head. shouldn't be TOO difficult to simplify it to the basics though.
As to what it is, it's a really drastic re-design of this:

this thing is soooo ugly. the only thing I've ended up keeping between this and the new sketch (and the new sprite for that matter) is the head and the basic concepts of the torso.
hopefully I'm getting this in better shape since i'm trying to put it all down in a few days rather than dragging the design out a few weeks.

even more changes. this time taking note that the arms were totally messed up other than not being aligned vertically. also adjusted shading in several areas, along with a few color issues.

nobody has anything to say? there has to be something I'm doing wrong with this. :<

-new-

first was made for something I forgot, the squid was an experiment.

-old-

Some Valentine gift I made for a friend. maybe like 10-15 minutes tallying it all up.
There's a sketch to go with it, but I honestly don't feel like pulling my scanner out until it's actually Valentine's day.

updated with changes etc

Any thoughts so i might make this better before I have to give it to them?

I'd say that they were, but I'm really not good with animation. I've been having a hard time deciding how to set up the mid frames to fit with the concept of just swaying arms around and weight of the arms etc. (and yet somehow I can make fat on a 90s TV show character jiggle wildly with no problem) I'm sure eventually I'll get it, but it's gonna be awhile I think.

After messing around a bit, I ended up with red as the secondary and blue hues on the gray (with a little purple in the 2 lightest shades.) The legs seem to have taken the most benefit from this, the arms not so much. I'm still thinking that the head needs something, but if anything the 'jaw' area needs to be brighter than the surrounding head area, and the jaw lining could stand to be darker around it.

Haven't changed too terribly much yet. testing the waters with a green eye and changing around shading on a few areas. I'll probably get to the rest of it tomorrow, but I figured this was a good point to see if I'm handling what I have any better.

@ Bengoshia
While I do like that you managed to totally kill the outlines, the overall pop and definition seems to have suffered a bit in the transition. (the eye in particular is really obscured, and the focus on the head is lost a bit.) On the other hand, the arms look vastly better in the edit than what I was doing, especially the hands (I really shouldn't have tried to add finger definition the way I did. nobody's gonna really notice looking at it now.)
As for gender, it's female. it's not terribly important, but I guess it does explain the cute factor that it has.

@ CrazyMLC
I'm really awful at color schemes in general. I can definitely get a palette going if I can get some basic colors that compliment each other, but usually I just end up grey-scaling until I finally get something that fits. if you have something in mind, I'd like to see.

I guess to some extent I'm new here. I mostly just watched this place, but was scared to post because I'm not very good at all this stuff. Recently though, I've been needing some proper direction, so here I am.

based on this sketch. I made the first frame in like 30 minutes talking with my friends, then spent the past two days trying to figure out adding new frames and getting depth right.
I think I did it depth-wise, but at the same time I think I've fouled up in a lot of places. I'm not even sure if the animation is weighted right for me to add more frames to it or not. Duly noted though, this is my second attempt at seriously animating something. Take that as you will.

Any critique would be greatly appreciated. ;D
