Cool sprite, Its hard to comment on, it seems quite well drafted to me...
one thing I could comment on is his character, like his attitude and acting, I guess he's a 'good guy', but he seems like a pushover. Maybe its his stance, he seems quite rigid and nervous, ecspecially his lower body and legs. Maybe its the way his legs come out of his hips: perfectly level with the view, perhaps you could rotate his hips just a bit to add more realism. The pose seems like its in the middle of a movement like shifting his weight from one leg to the other or something I guess
just some thoughts, actually here's an edit to illustrate my point, I hope you don't mind, it was a blast

Hey guys, I think its cool to experiment with saturation levels, it seems just another tool in the tool box, right? Also, I'd like to mention HDRI imaging, the theory behind the file type is actually quite interesting regarding the range of natural colors versus photos, paintings, etc. Here's a  link in case you're not familiar, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDRI , forget the technical stuff, unless you're into that, check out the photo examples,  I just think its something to think about, atleast, when rendering by hand or when doing pixel art....

I second the great shading, blending on the clothes, but, for me, the shoulder area could use a bit of adjusting, mostly the hunchback elephantitis shoulder.
Thanks for posting it as a work in progress, for my own work, I always lose the appeal that I like in the line-art/rough when I finsh 'er off(that's mainly what I'm working on myself-you know wonky anatomy, etc, etc)...

Nice sly ninja you've got there, I could offer my two cents, here's an edit(I was concerned with what, in my opinion, was a bit of pillow shading), Thanks( I enjoyed/was inspired by editing your ninja! )

also I thought the oultine on the sword was a bit extreme
just a couple thoughts....later!

WOW looking great, I haven't seen your work in a minute and it blew my mind! One thing I could crit would be his fist energy glow... it looked to me like brass knuckles at first, but one seemed to be around his wrist, also for my own work, I like to make sure the whole pose is working, rather than adding elements like a leg after....
