Hide and Seek

on: February 28, 2007, 10:19:44 am

Very much still just a WIP.
I've began the basic sketch and now I've begun to work on the rock.
Once I have a feel for how I want the rock to look, I'm going to just do the same to the scenery so it matches.

although I would really like to see this sketch with dark colors and red lasers in the bg I really like the bright colors. really depends on the atmosphere you want to achieve. I like the shading style you've started with, doesn't seem like you will need much shades to make this piece good-looking :)

God I love those rocks. Excellent job so far.
If I were you... I'd go with a greyish red base color for the guy with some spongey texture dithering.
Oh yes naked women are beautiful
But I like shrimps more haha ;)

Scary, that's pretty much exactly what I had earlier for the character.
But I didn't like it at first.
I'll see what I can do.

Your rock has defined shapes, but then each defined edge fades into the green mass. I think you should think about where you're placing your rocks better, rather than what you've done which appears to be making a shape, and then thinking about details later on. It is too reminiscent of a crumpled up piece of paper, to me.

I think Sherman Gill made a nice one...although I think he would do better in a more fire orange coulor.

It's obvious that my characters awesomeness spread onto the rocks. Or he was referring to the character. Or something else.

Anyway, the small rocks that are defined mainly by their highlights, they seem unbalanced. Particularly the second highest one. I recommend you removed the dark outline on the top of them, and maybe just use the second darkest blue?

I meant that you should unify the shapes, make them into larger more understandable rock structures.
Something like this:

Except cleaner.

I think the blue spots aren't really putting that much of a effect on it.
And add some lighter colours or organic ones.

Me to.

I say because this is such a small piece you use greater shade or colour differency.
Dont dither and make sure you give it main physical features out.

when you dither, you are working from small to large.
try working from large to small.

I think in most of your pieces, they are generally too noisy, especially for their small size. I don't think dithering is needed that much here. Again, more flat simplistic shading will do the trick, in my opinion. I also  got rid of the extra redish hue that was in the aliens body. I thought that it wasn't necessary to have it, since it was already so close to the purplish/reddish hue you had in the beams and such. Not to mention, I tried enlargening his chest to show deep panting, as well as widen his eyes, to show fear...

Hope to see an update!
