Pixel Art / Re: [C+C] Character Designs
« on: June 06, 2017, 06:28:27 pm »
Hehe, the correct term is actually "Contrapposto". "Contrapasso" is something totally different! ;D

Your redone models are much improved! Good work! This is just my opinion but I think your character's are a bit too dark and should vary a bit more in color. All characters designs have the same "style" going on. Same color shirt/jacket/vest, same color pants, same color shoes. I think the colors work, especially for the two on the right, but I'd personally like to see some more color.

You've got what looks to be some pillow shading on the man's baby blue chest. Some on the bubble girl's right side arm.

Good stuff, I really like the character! I think the first action (hurling insults at PC) looks pretty good. Maybe try giving his straight pointing arms some muscles but maybe not. You should have a more expressive pose for him about to be crushed though. It's way too simple and similar to you idle and hurling insults pose. How would you position your body if something massive was going to fall on you? Would you stand tall and get ready to punch that ship in the face or would you cower back and put your hands up to protect yourself?

I started to think, what would a Looney Tunes character look like?

General Discussion / Re: Best Lookin Sprite Game?
« on: April 07, 2017, 10:00:33 pm »
Two games that I can think of off the top of my head are Metal Slug (basically the entire series probably) and OwlBoy. Mercenary Kings looks pretty nice too.

So you said "Sprite" game and not "Pixel" game so I would also include the games created by Vanillaware. Odin Sphere, Dragon's Crown, Muramasa: The Demon Blade and any other 2D game they've made.

edit: you did say pixel in your paragraph. derp.

Your feet are still twitching on one frame. Fix that and you'll be much closer to fixing your issues.

I'd remove the blinking but that's just a small nitpick.

When Mystery says your lines are twitching and bouncing all over the place, Mystery is talking about for example, the belt and bottom back of the skull. The belt seems to be jumping up and down and the shape of the bottom back of the skull is changing shape throughout the animation. Also, the black pixels on the front of the bandana move on a frame.

Thanks for the feedback Mystery! The gif is very helpful. So I added a bit of a small leg swing to the bots. Here's another attempt at the smoke too. Still a work in progress but it's looking less sloppy and looping better in my eyes. Still needs some work though.

Pixel Art / Re: Run Animation

Really nice squash and stretch update. Really adds character to the run cycle. I use Pyxel Edit for pixel animation. They also have a free version that works well for animation too.

Anyway, I feel like maybe you should see more of the sword arm (bicep and stuff) since the character is 3 quarter view. Or the sword should be held further back. It seems too close to the body.

Pixel Art / Re: opinions on tablets

I think a small tablet is pretty good for some pixeling. I have a small Wacom Sapphire and the drawing space is 4x5 inches. It's really good for painting, landscapes scenes, blocking in stuff sometimes, early wip animation work and other pixel related stuff. I also have a larger Wacom Intuos but that's not as useful for pixel art.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I took another attempt at making an explosion. Thanks a lot of the tips Mystery! This one is a little smaller and I originally intended it to be for a specific robot. I'll probably reuse it for all small robots though. Anyway, here's a few animations actually. A walk cycle, robot death animation, an explosion and a smoke trail coming from the corpse of the small destroyed robot.

Smoke is early WIP. It's pretty tough too! I've also worked on more of the foliage. I added one more frame to these and I think these two examples look a bit better than my previous. It's very short grass and leaves that would hang on the wall. Feedback would be appreciated!

Pixel Art / Miscellaneous NES Style Effects Critique
« on: March 30, 2017, 02:47:12 am »
Hello all! Would like some feedback on these game animations. I'm making a NES style game (limited with a NES color palette but with more frames of animations).  I plan on creating explosions, gun effects, collapsing level tiles/blocks (Metroid Style), and other effects. Here's an explosion I created.

I like it but it looks a bit...sloppy somehow. Would appreciate any help fixing it up.

I'm looking for a way to create animated environment tiles too. Here's an environment and an attempt at animating some flowing grass. I want to animate some of the other grassy tiles on the wall too.

It's hard! Any ideas or tips on how to animate grass and other small environment tiles would be helpful. I'm thinking about creating lights or panels that have slight animation too. Any critique on the environment would be helpful too. I think I might change the background from all black to something else. Anyway, thanks!

Thanks Mystery! The original Castlevanias on NES definitely have one frame. I'm just having some fin and trying to push myself. Even though I'm got NES graphics, I'd like to have nicer animations. I had a bit of the head bobbing back and tried to make it more noticeable. I've also changed the color palette, differentiated the characters top and bottom pieces.

I actually still like my original animation (the one with the extended leg) since it looks more dynamic and action packed, in my opinion. Anyone, I'd appreciate any feedback on this close to final animation. I'm taking waaay longer on this specific animation than I would like. I really need to start working on the shorter distance knock back animation and entirely new animations now. I wonder if it wouldn't be better to create a new thread in the animation sub board? It might get some more feedback. Anyway, thanks for checking out my post!
