Pixel Art / drawing with a cigarette
« on: March 17, 2016, 01:11:56 pm »
impressions on this?
for an album cover. hand will likely be drawing something (even though that makes no sense lol)

im a bit iffy about the large dark area, not showing background fingers for example. not sure if thats an issue because it isnt really exposed to light. will be tweaking the tinting where the cigarette light radiates.

this is pretty silly but what do you guys make of it?

Cool. Thanks for the great edit Ambivorous, good to remind me that texture actually exists haha. Slowly learning about how much contrast to use. I'll give this another try, might add some visible arms. They're kinda supposed to be hiding inside the robe.

Nice and smooth, but his stride is very short (both his arms and legs don't really swing that much). Also leg movement should happen at the hip rather than just below it. Also, his feet plod on the ground perfectly level, natural movement would be more like Heel -> toe. Nice drawings though, good start.

Yo.

Made this and I'm kinda stuck? This is from scratch in GIMP. Didn't make any concept sketches or anything aside from working copies in the program itself.

How effective is this?
Things she has that I wanted to be obvious:
Orange hair fanning out
Large cloak with collar

Things giving me issues:
Shading in general I guess, especially cloak to dress
Eyes
Too many colours?

Feel free to edit, I'd really like to see how people do better than this with the size limitations.
thanksssss :D

This isn't much of an edit because I think its pretty good already.

Agree with legs though, changed them a bit. The middle demonstrates her figure a little more than colours do. I think the legs were too thin. Made them a bit thicker around thighs, tried to get a sense of the calves/knees also. Made them longer in general, which required the shorts to come up a bit. Made the shirt less draping and long to keep the midriff showing, which I assume is a style you want to keep.

The only other real problem was the contrast and the saturation. Tried to make them less of a smooth ramp (see Hue Shifting). I left the colours in there as a comparison so you can have a look.

Edit: Oh, and I added a mouth, I think the piece can handle it but that's your choice. Also I think flat black and flat white are a little overbearing. Experimented a little by removing all the greys as well, but I think grey pants would be fine. Even near black and near white would be cool but I thought I'd compare it to this.

you know, that is massively helpful. its funny how limited your scope can get once you get an idea of a cool concept in your head. Thanks for this piledriver.

I really like the third one. will play with some of my own ideas and post something new at a later date.

Cheers!

Thanks a bunch Decroded.

Have been studying hard over the last couple of days, getting as familiar as i can with colour theory as a baseline. You'll see me around editing others' work for practice and maybe coming up with some cool challenges when i improve my skills a bit. Pixels are funnnn. really loving it as a subgenre to digital art, the future is the past.

/thread i suppose.
hiatus on this piece but maybe youll remember it when i post it again in future

Thanks for the help everyone

Had fun with your design :)

I agree with a few of the suggestions in here already including leg length. I am very new to pixel art but I am loving it, so many techniques. I am focusing on hue shifting, which I think is really important from what I have learned so far. trying to emulate natural light and shadow is really cool, as well as using complementary colours in shadows. I did a few things here. made a few ramps going from green to green-blue and then blue to light blue. used that for most of the main colour work.

altered your jacket to be a blueish red, mainly just to see how it looked, adding more blue to the shadows. had to rework the palette a few times while working.

The important thing i learned with this exercise is to pay close attention to the saturation/value of all your midtones and work from there. The Saturation and Value need to be in line with eachother across all colours; i.e: they need to be roughly exposed to the same amount of light, shadows/highlights excluded. The most important thing is value/saturation, allowing you to 'go wild' with hue. Im no expert though clearly. I had to eyeballed the colour relationships as i worked. GL with your work.

Sonicspin your edit looks amazin love the use of green shadow. so appealing.

thanks a bunch for the tips guys.

I will be doing some character design stuff tonight i think. really want to get a nice colour palette down. maybe i am thinking too far ahead but here are some palettes ive been experimenting with. colour is very challenging for me somehow. I think most of these look ok, to the point that it will come down to background contrast etc.

some colour roughs:

i think 5 and 7 are best

touched up 5 and 7

further roughs. trying out hue shifting here.

If you guys have any tips about how to get a nice hue shift id appreciate it. not sure if im looking in the right places online but it seems like the kind of thing thats very hard to describe. colours just 'look right' together or they dont.

I dont think i have the worst eye for colour but there is an art to it thats for sure.

Hey thanks for the work guys, I like the options. I am using your idea Decroded, for the hands on hips. I think it's working well. Going to try and colour this one in a more interesting way, and work harder on eliminating such a strong outline.

I was trying to do the light source coming from the front, veering to the right. I don't think it was effective.

This should give you a more clear idea of where the arms are connected. (WIP)

The two pairs that were folded have changed positions a little. In any case, they are now attached at the shoulder, the longer pair is kinda hanging below them. they all almost come out of the same sockets I guess? Hard to say haha.

I hope you guys like this one, because double the sprite size is going to be hell to animate, at least for me lol
