Birdman with Backpack [animated gif]

on: May 13, 2016, 10:36:18 pm
Random and nonsensical gif I made today:

Is this considered pixel art?  I made pixel by pixel but almost looks really cartoony.

How does it look?  (besides his face looking odd being part bird part man)

Decided wasn't worth time to add background to something this silly.
Here to learn pixel art.  Feedback always appreciated.

There's always a lot of talk surround this sort of topic.
Why wouldn't it be?

I'm pretty new and some of the art I've done just looks more cartoony than pixelated/pixely. I'm aware there is a lot of discussion on 'what is pixel art', but I guess I'm not really looking for validation but any pixel art no-nos that I'm doing to be pointed out or techniques I need to work on. Maybe some of my colors still don't have enough contrast?

Yah, I love the loop too! Fun stuff!

I would say this most definitely pixel art! If you notice, there are some pixels that appear and disappear around the neck area. Another nitpicky thing, your character falls and lands a little above where the "ground" is. You character is walking on on a straight "line" and falls a lands a little above the line. It looks like that at least.

So I never got a Birdman feeling from your character. If you didn't tell me, I would have thought it was a blue man with a yellow nose. It might help adding a larger beak.

Pixel art isn't about looking pixel-y. Many pixel artists go to great lengths to disguise the pixel look. Some of the recently popular styles that make the pixel nature of the work very noticeable are just that - styles. Pixel art is much more than that.
Like others have mentioned, there's lots of discussion about what constitutes "pixel art", but I see it as pixel-level care throughout. Your piece is clean on the pixel level, every pixel serves a purpose, so I'd call it pixel art.

I agree about the issues others have pointed out.
Also, it looks strange that the piece has a smoother framerate when the bag is flying. I think I know why you did it, but it makes the choppy animation elsewhere look choppier in comparison.
