Pixel Art / Re: Blue Guy
« on: December 20, 2009, 09:37:54 pm »
First of all, when doing some character you need characteristics :P Yeah, I know it sounds stupid. But right now your guy is just a button with cross-eyes. Are those intentional? If yes, then try to make it look that is intentional, and not like you just mirrored them. The same thing happens with the rest.

If you don't know how to make arms and legs (like myself  :D), then don't put him some smileys extremities. Again, unless that's what you are going for.
Better concentrate on the head for now, and then add the rest.

Also, the shadow you gave the head made it look like a clickable button. It seems that if your character would turn, it wouldn't be a sphere, but a square.

This is a quick edit I made:

In conclusion the most important thing you need is to know what you're going for. If what you are going for is just practice, then as Lizzard said learn from looking at other people sprites.

They could use some highlights and shadows. Right now they are all in the dark.
Try to break the simmetry a little bit more. Specially in the Nicholas spirte with all the guns.

Danny could be a little bit fatter, and a little bit shorter.

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] Square Jawed Character
« on: December 16, 2009, 10:01:44 pm »
I made a quick edit:

I removed every black outline.
Since the character is a square jawed, I remarked that, with some lines along the face.
Also the eyes where too stuck, so i separate them a little bit. And added some eyebrows.
Change the lighting on the legs, and change the blue from the trousers.

Now that I'm watching my edit, the light source is kind of confusing. Stick to one light source, not like me :P I tend to pillow shade.

Hope something helps.  :)
I'm just a newbie, but I like to practice.

Pixel Art / Re: Need Help with Hokage Building from Naruto

At that resolution, I don't think pixel art can provide any aesthetic benefits. It will take a long time to draw using this fine level of control, but the results will be too small to appreciate.

I think you should re-read this.

Looking at your last version, with the dithering and all, the building is very monotonous. You should add A LOT of details, to make it come to life.
I know it's in an early stage, but maybe it would be better to have a building not proportional to the characters.

Pixel Art / Re: Evil Rat [WIP]

I'll help you out :)

Your rat needs to be exactly half as high on the southward facing sprite as it is wide on the eastward facing sprite. That's the classical perspective used in 90% of the oldschool RPGs, including the screenshot you showed.

It's basically a variation of isometric, but rotated 45° to have the four cardinal directions facing in up, down, left and right. This means that a barrel (which doesn't have corners), should look identical in isometric and this perspective.

I hope that helped.

It did, thanks a lot. There's a name for this perspective? Or it just called classical?
What about humans or antropomorphic creatures (which are very narrow)? Is there any guide/page, which I can learn more about this classical perspective?

This is what I've done so far (I know the head is too big compared to the body, but I like it , maybe I should make de body a little bit bigger, or make the body even more frontal):

I still need to fix the side sprite.  :) But I jump to other part of the project or even to other stuff when I get a little stuck.

Thanks for the help  ;D

One thing I just noticed about the concept is: if she's a hunter, she shouldn't be wearing high heels.

Temple/Castle (Not PixelArt) Background:

Solid Background:

Now that I shrink it further, I think i'm waaaay wrong. Maybe I should go with a full frontal view.

¿How is the Zelda/Tibia/Pokemon/etc perspective called? I think, that this game, at least tries, to have that kind of perspective.
The thing is, I think Zelda, doesn't have profile view for the sides. So... I don't know.

I still think the head looks weird, like she's leaning backwards.

Maybe you could make a small animation. Some lightining/fire effects. Some wind. Just to add some tention.
Right now, it looks like a profile image from an rpg game.

Are those two perspectives meant to be used together? At the very least they look very strange next to each other because one is a bird's eye view and the other is a profile view.
I know, but honestly, I never understood quite well the perspective in this game, here is a small screen:

Now, that I'm watching it, I think I should change the bird's eye, to a more frontal view.

The rats look hairless, at least to me, mainly because they are oddly shiny.
Relying purely on dithering alone wont give a hairy appearance.
On both the profile and top view there is a clear line between the hind legs hand the main body, this makes it look like its been chopped in half and sewn back together. :o
I'll work on that

The body has this big flat area of gray behind the head, and it really does look flat.
You mean this parts?:

The weird background makes it hard to understand or interpret the pictures.  :( (Please use a solid color.)
Sorry about that, I'm working with that background, because that's where the rat gonna be. The next update I'll upload in this background, and also a solid one.

Thanks a lot for the critics.  ;D
