You could always use other programs instead of photoshop.  :y:

I like it so far! Couple of crits, theres a shade of magenta on the buttons that doesn't add anything, same goes for a couple of the greys.

Quick colour edit:

Colours down from 16 to 13.

Pixel Art / Re: how about this creepy tree

I think also what Jad was getting at is that each branch of the tree should have its own shadow/highlight in the same way that each finger has its own. As of now it still feels very flat because of the left/right gradient over the whole piece. Try giving each branch and root its own individual shadow and highlight, that alone should help quite a bit.  :y:

If that doesn't get taken down, I've lost all hope for DeviantArt. ;(

don't let that stop you, I've had about five since I got mine (pretty much when it came out) and I've never had to pay anything for it, they've fixed it up and given me a month free xbox live every time.

It's cool that they give you a months free xbox live, :y: but 5 times is pretty excessive imo. I like to get max life out of everything, I mean I still play the PS2 and I've had that for about 7 years. Though supposedly in the newer Xboxes the problem has been resolved? And Jakten that's exactly what I don't want to happen, warrenty running out and having to buy a new one, or going back for repairs every month. Hassle hassle. I still really want one though.  :P

Speaking of things breaking, Wii no longer reads discs. Being sent in for repairs. :ouch: Ohh the irony.

I've been tempted to buy a 360 but aren't they pretty much guaranteed to get red ring of death after a couple years?

That mustache makes you look like there is a girl tied in your basement
LOL!
For Helm or anyone else who has ever had one, do people treat you differently when you grow a 'tache?

Anyone else played VVVVVV yet?

Just completed the demo. Game is awesome. Music is superb. I'm wondering how much more immersive it would be if graphics were to the standard of everything else. Still <3 it very much tho.

I think there was going to be a GBA version, but that got cancelled. Found a few screenshots of when it was pure pixels.

EDIT: Rosse found some better screens below.

Thanks! ;D though I'm no where near the level of some on this site. I will get there eventually.

Indigo I presume he was talking purely about freelance work. I would love to have a full time pixel job but they seem to be somewhat rare.

Heh, not to sound discouraging, I took your "making a living" as making some money. So making a living out of it, I think that may depend entirely on your standard of living.  :)

Hello there,

I asked myself the same question a couple of years ago. Now I can safely say the answer is yes, but not without a little hard work and dedication. You don't need to be absolutely amazing at it, but I think to have a constant stream of income you need to have decent pixelling skills combined with competent art fundamentals (forms/lighting, anatomy, colour theory etc). Having a full website/resume would also help a lot (something I still need to work on).

But yeah as I said, you don't need to be uber good. I only know very basic art fundamentals but they are enough to allow me to create art work comfortably and at a good speed.

There's a great article by Adam Tierney on freelancing here: www.adamtierney.com/Freelancing.doc

And if you haven't seen it already there's another on here by Adam Saltsman (though this one really applies when you start getting paid work) http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/AdamSaltsman/20090724/2571/Pixel_Art_Freelance_Best_Practices__Guidelines.php

So if you're wiling to put a serious amount of time and energy into it, and embark on a never ending learning process, I say go for it.  :)

Yes, I often get asked to work by the asset also. I haven't done any "true" hourly jobs where by time logs are kept. Most of the time I will work out how long a job will take, apply the hourly rate, and then we both agree upon that fixed price. If it takes me longer than the said amount of hours to complete the work then that's my fault for underestimating.
