General Discussion / Re: Pixelation Rebirth?
« on: April 25, 2006, 10:08:12 am »
That blue pixelation had was for masochists.
It was horrible (IMO), esp. when switching from it to a lighter (color wise) site, it would make me see in negative for a few secs.
("Maybe" it was useful to check if selout worked in dark bgs, but then some people also tried AAing the outlines so it would work on it, and I think that's awful.)
Anyway I'm kinda glad with the colors right now, my eyes thank it.

My vote goes to Demon's Crest.
While I really like the styles of the other two, I'd rather get to know from games I'm not that familiar with (DC in this case).
So yeah.

Isnt the one before Mario, the guy from the Mokey Island?
And also the one under Snow white, I think it is the woman from the 5th element

I think they are really well done, really recognizable.

Pixel Art / Re: Realistic Dither
« on: March 29, 2006, 07:19:24 am »
St0ven has a tutorial about dithering here, not sure if it covers all the aspects but I guess good as an introduction.

I dont think dithering is a pixel style but more like a technique to apply in pixel art. Ideally you should use it for applying texture, saving color count, adding different effects, and for stylistic purposes, though the last one is more of a "each to his own" matter (and I believe it shouldnt be abused, and it working better if it aint the only technique you use).
What you did with your picture doesnt really work. Sure it is dithering but doesnt help the picture, it's just there randomly sitting making the picture look rather jagged. The palette you used has colors so close that dithering aint even needed, actually it is almost unnoticeable unless you zoom.

You could go to this thread http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=932.0 and look at some of the pictures posted there and see how they use dithering.

Not meaning to sound harsh, but if you are going to use it wrong, I believe it's better not to use it. Then again you could practice if you are willing to "master" it.

Good luck with further stuff

I'd say you should ignore all those comments saying the anatomy looks alright since it doesnt.

Arms are too short, legs are too long and there is something wrong going on in the crotch area, also the feet are really small.
You should pay more attention to anatomy, hair and facial expressions ideally (you could practice using a big mirror and posing yourself for reference).
Also use a reference to see how clothes and their folds work.

Then once you are done with that you should learn and think about light sources, from where do they come and how the would affect the sprite itself (again you could use a lamp and yourself posing in front of a mirror and see how light affects you and try to "import" that into your canvas) rather than coloring randomly.

Next step would be learning how to color and choosing your palette, that's something you end up learning with a bit of practice, but right now you could start by looking at other people's pictures, palettes and how they use it (and if you want to go further study color theory, study and seach about paintings and all that stuff).

Good luck.

My vote goes for Chaos Engine aswell.
Didnt really know about it before this (heh shame on me I guess) but after seeing screens and stuff, thought it had amazing graphics and would like to know more about it.
So yeah.

I believe practice, knowing your tools and knowing what you want to do.

I was working on one of these, started 2 weeks ago, but forgot about it.
Tried to go back to it yesterday, as I remembered about it, but everything I did for it looked rather rushed, and ended up feeling ill from a cold I was carrying since a few days ago.
Anyway, I'll just post the wip of what I had.

So far it only uses one palette row.
The road tiles were made multi-tileable for creating different cracks and effects using the less amount of tiles.

Anyway, good luck to everyone that is participating.
