Here is the Roman legionary. I'll try to make him move around and fight.
Does this look ok?

Study this carefully and repeatedly, starting at about 3:30 in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUQ_EVE1Zpc&feature=related
Notice how powerful it looks when he thrusts the spear? The reason is because he pulls his arm back every time and then fully extends it, whereas your character just pushes it forward. Also after the thrust, your character instantly reverses momentum on the spear. If you actually pushed that heavy spear forward with all your might you couldn't just instantly yank it back, because you're fighting against the momentum you just released. The action of thrusting the spear should have several parts: The wind-up, the thrust, the recovery, and the retraction. They can all happen pretty fast, but they all have to be there for it to look natural.

The hand should be just below this shoulder, which is much higher than it is in your drawing. The back should bend a bit, pushing the shoulder back just before the thrust. The entire body should move to put more force into the thrust. Next to that, it is more logically to swing a lance like that. Thrusting is slow, if you do not kill your enemy with a thrust (if he evades, if there is more than one enemy or if he can have the attack) you are going to suffer a bloody death within a second.!

i know you've probably got to keep him pretty stationary, but how about something with even just a little movement?

quick concept, forgive some hideous volume changes

edit: en masse :P

A mistake is a mistake.
The same mistake twice is a bad habit.
The same mistake three or more times is a motif.

Your edit looks more alive and dynamic. Nice job!  I'll try to move the legs as you did, later.
But I will leave a spear that flies through linear trajectory.

And new.

hmm, that was actually one of the few important things about the work was to point out that, contrary to popular belief, most missiles were indirect.  Slings, javelins, bows, these could be aimed directly when in small groups, but on the battlefield typically it was speed that was praised, not accuracy.

of course, if your work is for a small group of soldiers, linear is fine/necessary
