General Discussion / Re: Game tilesets and asset sizes

After the reply I received form the pixel art section i realized It was more of a general question than strictly a critique on my art work, I am genuinely trying to get an answer to my problem.

General Discussion / Game tilesets and asset sizes
« on: March 09, 2018, 08:44:33 pm »
So like so many people I have an idea for a game, what I want to know is how to figure out what size to do the tilesets and art work for the game. I have played around with everything from 16x16 through 128x128 size tiles for the tilesets and I'm having a problem trying to figure out what size will work best with the idea I have for the game. Any suggestions on game design mock up tutorials or just general advice would be most welcome  :-[

Thank you for all the information, I am still learning about game makeup and its a bit confusing. I have an idea that when I did smaller sized tiles and entities didn't quite work for what I was trying to do so now I am trying to learn the best ways to make things bigger but still keep that pixely simplistic cute look.  I will do some more research on your recommendations  :)

Pixel Art / Tileset size
« on: March 09, 2018, 06:45:07 pm »
Hello all, it's been quite awhile since I was last on this forum.  :blind:

My question for today is the size of the tiles for a game. I have made a mock up of 2 different size tile sets both with a slime entity as a reference for the game entity sizes.
Neither tile set is actually complete they are both just rough drafts. so it is not really the art work im looking for a critique on at the moment. should i consider shrinking the enemies and character? or stay with the bigger sizes?
tile set is 64x64
tile set is 128x128

I would suggest dropping the windows and doors just a tad, but most rpg houses ( if that's what your going for) have a flat forward front with the 3/4 view roof..
its like looking at a cube with the roof being placed on top of the cube....
hope that made a little sense..

here is an example i pulled just from a quick google search.

So I tried to take the advice I was given and reworked both the ground and the forest edge tiles, Im thinking ill use the green ground tile without grass tuffs on it and make sporadic grass patches over the more brown ground tile.

no shadow on this set yet.

I agree the left side leg is making that side look to long... possibly bring the stance just a little closer together..

the top right piece is the original ground tiles with the original bush/tree

Ok I have toned down the ground tiles and added some shadow to the forest tiles, I also tried to smooth out the outline shading on the bush/tree leaves as well ass did 2 different shades for the stump. The shadow isn't permanent yet and will be defined later.
