Damn, got spied already. I was going to make some scathingly brilliant piece related to testicles. Ah well...

A world in which I can't freely mock and belittle an MS Paint user is a world I'd rather not live in. Unfortunately, it seems in Vista Microsoft actually paid attention to how shitty their imaging program is for the first time since Windows 95 (or is it 3.1?). So I'd say it's more important than ever that all reasonable and sane pixel artists continue to razz and rile any poor misguided Paint using souls at moment's notice.

[edit]

OK, so I've never actaully mocked an MS Paint user, nor have I had reason too. But I really do believe that just about any thing else >>>>>>>>>>>> MS Paint

Grrrr... I WILL get one of these made in under 40 minutes. I had more problems with the palette than anything, so it's actually longer than the previous attempt.

I can just see Tsugumo going in de-lurk mode to team up with pkmays to battle us over how 'hey, capcom does it!'

Heh, I wish this would happen, if only for the purpose of hearing from Tsu again. I don't think either of us felt that selout was the end-all-be all of sprite style. But hey, if an overly dramatic religious debate could bring him out of the wood-works, I'd be game. ; )

My feelings on selout have changed from back when it was the "hot new thing." I currently feel that solid colored outlines of various brightness with minimal internal AA tends to make for more attractive outlines. I'm probably thinking the same thing Indigo is. But really, skill and perception are the biggest factor in determining how good an outline looks regardless of the style. I didn't have very good perception of the technique I was trying to implement on the old blue board, and a lot of my sprites came out harsh and unattractive because I went overboard with selout.

Quote from: Indigo
...I say that coloured outlines deserves a pixel-term.  It deserves it much more than the choppy sel-out does.

Colored Outlining With Predetermined Optical Oppositional Pigmentation - Cowpoop

In case you didn't know, I'm pretty damn awesome at coming up with a catchy phrase for pixel techniques.

Selout/inverse anti-aliasing are only required if the sprite and background are separate objects. For a piece like this, I think AA is the way to go.

I am missing the black outlines too. It's all about aesthetics, but I think the piece gained something with the additional highlights and detailing, but lost something when the crisp outlines where blued up.

Cool beans. I do think the highlights need more contrast in them. The lack of a nice bright highlight dulls out the sprites too much. Also, Terry's legs seem somewhat bulky, although VictorR's edit seems to fix that somewhat.

Great work. I'd love to see a Blue Mary sprite. ;)

Fighting games. :-) In late '99 I got a Dreamcast, KOF98 and a hand-me-down slot loading iMac and made some fighter sprites on whatever the paint program that came with Appleworks on OS 9 is called. Still got the iMac, but I do most of my stuff on my 10X faster PC.

Pixel Art / Re: WIP Girl's face

Drawing a realistic and accurate face is one of the more challenging tasks an artist can face. Drawing a realistic and accurate face from memory is even more difficult. Unless blessed with a photographic memory, even a professional would have a hard time doing justice by attempting to draw someone from memory. I'd highly suggest you get some sort of reference for the face; whether it be a photo of your friend, a photo of someone who looks like your friend, or just an entirely different face altogether.
