[WIP] RPG character style

on: July 07, 2007, 05:44:41 am

This is the style I'll be using in an RPG I'm working on.  Basically, everything starts off really bland, then, depending on how you play, your character and the game's graphics will either become more dark and gloomy, or more happy and colorful.

What do you think of the style?  It's supposed to be simple, as that makes it easier to make a variety of NPC's.

EDIT:  Come to think of it, the "good" ones at the bottom are complete crap.  I'll probably redo those.

Can you hear it? It's the sprites crying!

"We need more contrast, we're too hard to make out at 1x!! ; 3; Please fix us!"

Of course, I'm jesting, with the harsh tone and all, as a matter of fact, I think these small characters are absolutely wonderful! <3

The critique stands though, the all-coloured outlines make for a really nice effect, almost as if they were drawn with crayons (actually reminds me of kirby's dreamland 3), but you'll need to up the contrast quite a bit for them to be easy to see.

The walking animation looks odd, try making the legs closer together.

Alright, I think I've got it.

Just a note though, the game's being made in RPGMaker2k3, so it'll actually run at 2x size.  So I've been aiming for it to look best at that size.

it looks like a 2 frames animation, make it 3 frames, the animation must be more detailed so the characters move smoothly, right now they look like they are in some kind of mixer, or hold a jackhammer in each hand :o
my way of the pixel? -> minimum effort, maximum quality 0_0

If you read you see he'll use RPGmaker - that can't handle more frames if I'm right :P

Yea, RPGmaker sucks. Use Game Maker.

Like other people have said, the legs are too far apart and the animation isn't smooth enough.

Hm, I did make the legs closer in that last update.  But they're 2 pixels away.  I can't think of a way to make them any closer without the outlines touching, or it looking like he's leaning.

Make him lean, then. :) Adds a bit of sass, a bit of naturalness (that's not even a word, is it?). It'll also help the walk cycle, since you can alternate the "extra" pixel, for a much more naturalistic walk cycle, even with only 2 or 3 frames.

That said, these are awfully cute. :D
