General Discussion / Re: Bad at what i like
« on: August 03, 2007, 04:53:31 pm »
I have some talent juice if you'd like a sip.

I challenge myself to fill 4 pages a week with game design ideas and at least 4 pages with character designs or redesigns. Works pretty well. 3rd week of this little project and I've come up with a handful of good ideas, some interesting character concepts and I think I've redrawn every classic RPG hero from fighter to the guy from Dragon Warrior 1. It's nice to analyze some old school RPG characters to see why they are so classic. It's a fairly solid practice technique I think. If I feel I need help with a certain thing I just spend a page drawing it. 8 full pages a week isn't hard.

You can skip that and just take talent juice, same results.

The crescent thing.... a moon I guess it is. Shouldn't be pillow shaded.

If anyone considers being a pixel mentor can they contact me?

Shadaron, I suggest you go through a handful of drawing tutorials. They'll help you tremendously. Your smiley face it's too bad.

Pixel Art / Re: Chess pieces.

I agree with what the previous two said. I like the blue and gold more than the black and white. Wouldn't it be hard to play chess at this perspective? Side view I mean, I always imagine chess as a top down thing. If not please explain how this is going to work out because I'm really interested.

He doesn't seem to have a distinct neck... or any neck.
Eyes are too close and he's looking at his nose. Eyes are in the middle of our heads.

just because you used the pencil tool on ms paint doesnt make it "pixel art"

and pixel art is not "cartoony"....

pixels mean very much, they have great power.
Pencil tool doesn't mean it's pixel art.
Pixel art can be cartoony if it feels like it.
Pixels do mean very much and they do have great power.

Pixel art is the careful placement of pixels, sometimes in pixel art an entire eye is just one pixel. Careful placement of that pixel is required other wise the eye can be too high or too low.
Pixel art is cartoony, it's also not cartoony. It can be as realistic as life or as unrealistic as Popeye.
Pixel art is a pretty awesome and powerful thing. You can do this:

or this:

I didn't touch your work at all, I merely played with the palette.

That aside, philliptr is right. Your light source is very inconsistent. I thought it was from the top but then she has a shadow on her back. You might want to go back to the line art and fix the anatomy and then goof around with it.

EDIT:
Here's an ugly ugly guide:

I shouldn't have used photoshop but I did. Lighting is pretty accurate. ignore the hands, they're goof.

Sorry for not explaining, I think the gun has too much recoil. Also it's like it stops in mid-air. It should be "falling" the whole time instead of falling once it hits something. Anyone else agree? Do you agree robotacon?

Looks like it would have the same force as a super soaker, not a fire hose. But I think it's fine since things needed to be exaggerated here and there. I hope the "shot" looks different, I guessing that's a fill in.

Looks like Yoshi's island kind of. The main character's hair looks like it'll need more contrast from the skin. Post the sprites of the main character if you can.

Thanks to everyone who took their time to make a comment.

@Zeid, as you can see I'm about to start playing around with the grass a bit, I think a highlight was necessary. I'll keep referencing yours as I work on it.
@Junkboy, I tried to take care of that lack of connection thing, looks a little better. Still suffers, from lookslikeacarpetitis but maybe varying the grass tiles will hide it a bit.

Thanks for your help so far I'll throw a mockup together soon enough.

This was intended to be cut up into tiles, is there anything I should keep in mind when making tiles?

EDIT:
The "health icon".

General Discussion / Re: Actual impact of Video Games
« on: July 12, 2007, 08:08:03 am »
I too don't play games much. Last game I played was the darkness and that was fun, but it only lasted 3 days without the multi-player. Pixel Art is more appealing to me because it's something you can do almost anywhere. Even the computers at Target have MSpaint, so I get to dick around there.
I recently have been doing a lot more pen and paper gaming (and game running) so that's even less time to video game. But I live in New England so this post is void.
