Pixel Art / Re: Deck of Cards
« on: February 08, 2017, 07:16:26 am »
well im going to be honest and say I personally don't really like this, although it's a cool idea, and I feel like I should like it.

I think the main reason is that the people aren't super readable and wouldn't be readable at all if you got dealt the card upside-down.

A secondary reason would be the inconsistency of style. I feel like the ace cards are way too different to the other cards. I also feel like the weapons are a but dull and hard to see, especially the shurikans. the cultures are too mixed, you have western and eastern but not 50/50. Also the diamonds are more rotated squares than diamonds, and I don't know what the weapon there is at all.

The balance of all the poses is off. Instead of being royal and awesome to be dealt, the royal cards feel weak and miserable, having no faces, expressions, or strength to support even their own bodies (eg. king of clubs). The contrast with the background is not good enough, especially with the character faces. The J on joker is too big. The club is not a very clear symbol. I would use a different glyph for the number 4 for the same reason of readability.

The card back is really cool, but again is not quite fitting the theme, era, or culture. Finally, I think I agree with other comments about the standard positive/negative space of the more standard cards being nearly as readable as the numbers, and this being important when playing.

You asked for a commercial critique!

Hey this is really good for starting out. Some easy improvement might be:

- instead of black outline use a dark grey, as it's contrasting very strongly
- increase the contrast on the gun. you have a couple of greys that are very similar and a couple of browns that are very similar. I'd make them more different in value (darkness).

The silhouette of the gun is very good and it is reading clearly and accurately. Your main focus should be improving the form inside the outline - getting the shapes to read well. To do this you will need to do research into lighting / light sources and clearly pick a light direction for the piece.

Cool. Glad I could inspire you a bit to add something different and more ruggedness - that was my intention as you're right my edit was too noisy.

Loving the chain! Definitely a big improvement. I'd push it all further. More colours and more complimentary colours, more design elements, more gold items not only coins. Keep thinking like you are with story (eg. someone cut the chain) as that is really showing in the piece now, adding interest.

For the slash mark in the wood, add a subtle highlight edge where the light hits it and bounces off - a shadow by itself is not enough.

One thing I'd add to further aamatniekss' comments - I think adding some "lost" detail would help hugely in this piece. ie. you don't need to detail every wood grain. Here is a quick and dirty edit (ok again it's too extreme and the palette doesn't quite allow for what im trying to do, but the basic idea is to reduce detail where you reduce contrast where you reduce light where you leave your focal point):

Thanks for your feedback. It's not easy to know what you mean. Is this better?

Do you think these proportions are better?

If you played the animation backwards it would probably be an excellent "running backwards" animation. I wonder if that says something...
