Pixel Art / Re: How would you start ?

Literally put in the Cowboy Bebop DVD (netflix whatever) and press pause on a scene you like, and draw that. Don't trace it, just draw it as best you can. Then go find some other stuff you like, and do the same thing. Keep copying things you like until you get good at copying them. In the meantime keep a sketch book with you, when you're not copying, try to remember the copies, and draw them without reference, or remember the poses and put your own characters on there. Remember how they draw the faces and draw your own characters in that style. Being good at art is as much a brain game as it is a technical skills game. If you draw a lot your technical skills will improve, but if you're not referencing professionals work your work will never look professional.

I don't know where the idea that this more detailed scene is more complex to implement into a game comes from. You literally just need to make shadow sprite, and one that goes in front of the player's feet to imply they're in deep grass. You don't need to shade every space to make sure wherever they're standing looks perfect with the blades of grass that are there. Where does that idea even come from?

Anyway the newer version looks good, I suggest for a next step you take what you learned with the grass and apply it to other areas in the scene, such as the bushes in the back. Right now they're looking pretty noisy. If you apply the techniques from the grass (simple shapes, hue variation etc.) you'll have a much more harmonious scene. Look forward to seeing your improvement.

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP][C+C] Ravamping old sprites.

Hmm now that I see it like that I do think the green works better there. Before I was just trying out swapping the colors but I think changing the shape of the shadow did help it be more clear.

I'm trying to stay away from using AA in that way just as a personal challenge, and with the exception of things like eyes have no single pixels. I find working with the limitations to be very satisfying, but I might rethink that in the future for the sake of simply having better artwork. Here's where I ended up.

I also see what you mean about the knight character, I tested out white as the highlight and I agree I like it much more. I will post an update to him once I fix the readability issue you mentioned.

Latest one. Not sure what I think about the flesh tone criticism. I think it's pretty hard to misread and to me it gives it a more painterly quality. I'm trying to keep the palettes sort of small and only use colors used in the small sprites on the portraits. I'll try some different things on the next one.

Hello. I'm in the process of revamping all of these sprites, and I would just like come C+C as I go along. Especially on the portraits.

I'm trying to adhere to the idea of clusters, but I'm very new to working like that.

Pixel Art / [C+C] [WIP] Opinions on composition and advice on anatomy
« on: August 23, 2016, 08:11:17 pm »

Hi, been messing around with this for a few weeks and I've decided I'm gonna finish it.

Just wanted to get some opinions on it before I spend a lot of time on it because I've never done anything this large before.

Honestly I would like to see the dynamic one in a game. The other one wouldn't keep my attention in a game, it makes him way more interesting.

The thing that bugs me is the shading on the face seems to be coming from the bottom right, but on the helmet it's on the left

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] Simon Belmont Whipping Animation sort of.

Well, I'm not really too good at coming up with character designs, so could you give me some suggestions on where to add details and what details?

And also I think I've got the shape the way I want it, I'm not going for realistic, cause that gives me a lot less freedom when it comes to animating it (but I'm not too sure about the poofy pants).

*edit*
 ?

The chest is too bare, but I don't know what to add...

Is this a good way to color it?
