Pixel Art / Re: Tile...Er...Cube set for project <WIP>
« on: November 04, 2010, 09:01:02 pm »
I would sort the shape too, it looks skewed, more cuboid than cube.

Read this (http://wwww.drububu.com/tutorial/) or similar to get a good idea of creating isometric work. Regardless of the angle you want to take the cube's shape needs to be solid before moving to coloring/lighting etc, as no matter how good everything else is, a fundamental flaw always sticks out horribly.

Lovely colors, the foreground blue rocks and pink sands could do with an AA color or too between the two shades, the jaggedness between light and dark shades takes from the overall smoothness of the piece as a whole. Some mussels on the boat or mast might work for texture, play with it, you don't want to make it too detailed as you said. The rock poking out of the sand at the bottom left looks a little lonely, maybe another few scattered in the foreground would make its position more natural (it makes the lower right look a tad empty with it and the starfish on the other corner)? Keep it up, nice work so far

I agree with adcrusher524 on the hue bit, shifting back to the yellow bands it, however I dont think his edit is an improvement for the bark especially - your own version has a beautiful texture. The palette is a little too pastel-pale, a little more saturation and contrast would liven it up. The shape of the tree, and especially the trunk is fantastic, excellent!

@aramaki
Really nice sense of depth gained with your mock up there.

I will shift the palette to the one above or a more colorful version of that later, I was using Pixen - and every time I save a piece it desaturates all the colors a little in my palette! Very frustrating

The palette in the 2nd post is the actual one, I am going to try the suggestion of a better fur texture so my colors will get a shift for the better then hopefully.

Looking nice so far, I think that you need to play with the palette.
-The floor: try using less contrasting colors, the tiles are good but too well defined, you will lose your characters on it.
-The wall: try a lighter shade for the darkest color as characters may be lost here too
-The table: looks like it has a different style to the rest, the 'lighting' at the top and bottom is odd, use those colors and a defined light source to redo the shading/texture
-The light from the lamps is a perfect circle, it should light the floor differently if at all as it looks very flat at the moment http://www.software-dungeon.co.uk/images/109974_dungeon3d.jpg http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:B7qCNkrnX_WRnM:http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/7794/lionpitco9.jpg&t=1

Take my words with a pinch of salt anyway, it will be nice to see characters in the prison and the are spruced up in general with more objects/structure.

As for suggestions to fill it up, if I think of a prison I think functionally what does it need?
- Maximum prisoners per area used
- Multiple levels of prisoners, and methods of accessing them - stairwells, lifts etc
- Prisoner showers, recreation area, food hall
- Guard/warden walkways to oberve prisoners and maintain order from
- Guard/warden barracks with their equipment, weapons etc, guard toilets
- Storage rooms for food, riot gear, recreation equipment, plumbing repair shizz
- Secure cells, secure compound walls
- Sick bay
- Isolation rooms
- Maximum security rooms for the most dangerous criminals

It has a castle-like feel to it here, so for nick-nacks/decals; shelves, high walkways, drawbridges/walkways, outer perimeter wall, heavy iron doors, archways, gargoyles, sewer gratings (large), open fireplaces, crates stacked unevenly, wall-mounted stuffed heads, wall mounted weapons, flags, tapestries, cracks/holes for mice, puddles/leaks, rubble, statues, torture chamber equipment, cellar doors (trap-doors) in the floor, treasure, skeletons, wall mounted shackles, nooses/excecution chamber, guillotine etc.

@FRAWG
I was aiming for having quite short fur to help illustrate a young age, I think a few folds could work nicely though - good idea! I'll give it a try on one of the frames and nail it down before re-texturing the whole animation.

@Tidbit
Thank you  ;D

Alright I have added animation! It's not totally done, but I plan to have him finish the cookie then burp it back out to complete the loop. I will shift the palette to the one above or a more colorful version of that later, I was using Pixen - and every time I save a piece it desaturates all the colors a little in my palette! Very frustrating.. I would stick with Pshop but animation and palette management isn't as straightforward.

To do;
-Complete animation
-Re-saturate the palette
-Tidy

The lower half of his body looks a bit static so in the tidying I think I will include some foot movement and the such as he leans forward, swallows etc. C&C appreciated

Here is another update, redrew it using the same the same pallet but taking some colors out of it. The redraw is a larger piece and the anatomy and pose makes a bit more sense. Falling asleep crosslegged with weird foot angles isn't that convincing..
Thoughts on this version?

[EDIT]: On retrospect I think the right hand (his left) could do with tidying, and the shading on the soles of the feet. Animation in this would probably be nice too.
[EDIT EDIT]: Annd I will saturate his feet some more in the next update. Any advice/recommendations?

Hey guys, finally got round to registering here, I've bin watching from the sideline so far. I'd really appreciate some help with this piece, texturing it didn't work out and I still feel like its difficult to read. It's a baby Yeti all curled up to sleep. Tips/Critique on any and everything about it would be great, I'm really not feeling any style off it and its the third redraw from scratch I've made :(.

[EDIT]: I reworked the pallet and touches up the shading and some of the main shape. Feeling a deal closer to my intent now.
