Trying to get a Retro (NES) Style. Any tips?

on: August 28, 2014, 11:16:34 am
Hello everybody.

I am planning to create a retro-styled game.
I love the Megaman NES Games and would love to create something in a similar style.
Other titles with nice graphics on the NES are "Rescue Rangers", "Ducktales", "Bucky O Hare"...and I just ripped some sprites from the new "Mighty Gunvolt" Game.

Edit:
I ripped those cause I really love that style and want to try learning from it...I do not intend to use it in my game.

I created a custom palette with a limited amount of colors < 50 ...what else could I do to improve my style?

Anybody got some guides on how to get a NES style done?

Thanks in advance

Recent thread here.

If you want it to look NES why are you intentionally not using the NES palette?

I think there are some colors I might not need.
I want it to look NES-like ....but its doesnt have to be 100% authentic.... kinda like the Shovel Knight team did.
I know they used the NES palette, but in an article they mentioned some colors they had to input cause the NES did miss those...

but...you are right...I should really try to stick to the NES palette.
Thanks for the clean (and ordered) palette.

That palette is the most "correct" as I understand it. Typically the closest to red-red you will get is either a bit too brown or a bit too magenta.
Another more saturated version is the one used in NES Screen Tool: http://img.uninhabitant.com/nstpal.png
You can always fiddle with the TV colour controls with something like this: http://bisqwit.iki.fi/utils/nespalette.php
