Winged goblin - flight animation

on: July 18, 2006, 10:36:09 am
Since no one cares about my job offer, I try to do things by myself  :P

Here's a winged goblin, it's and edit from an Actraiser 2's monster which had no wings.

The up/down movement is a simulation. In game,  it is generated by the engine.

What I notice immediately:

* He doesn't bend his arms at all, making it seem as though he has no elbows (I'm just thinking of most of the imp/demon aimations I've seen, and they usually bend their arms when they're flapping)

* The wing colors don't go very well with the rest of the sprite (duinno what's wrong with them -- too saturated is my first guess but I'm prolly wrong)

* Wings seem disconnected from arms (as if he is one of those old inventors who jumped off cliffs holding big wing contraptions) -- I don't know if that's what you intended, but if you want the wings to seem like part of him, ditch the dark outline on the arm at least.

* 3 frames is serviceable but it could look a lot nicer with 4 or 5.

* Middle frame looks like it has no arms

* No highlights on the dark brown "spikes" (or wooden frame?) of the wings

* Naturally the rest of his body should move a bit

I like it =D I just think I could like it a lot more ^_^

Thank you very much, I'll edit it :)

BTW, he IS one of those old inventors who jumped off cliffs holding big wing contraption. Goblins are famous for their mechanics which work five minutes, until the goblin crash :)

*sigh* Do we have to keep asking to include the original?

You say it's taken from actraiser? So include the original, so we can crit what's new...

I think he just wants crits on the animation, so he should be fine in this case.

Try to make the swinging up and down more forceful, you've got a good hang with the arms outstretched, but you need some inbetweeen frames.

First, the reference :

Now the new version :

About the palette, all the colors I used were taken from the original sprite ^^

I don't see him as flapping fast enough to keep airborne

i'd speed him up and remove some of the inbetween frames

not sure if you were using different delays, but don't, it's a big nono

That looks tons better, animation-wise! =) But like Zolthorg points out, the uneven speed doesn't work well. It makes him look like he is thinking about each flap before he decides to move his arms, and like he should be falling because he hesitates.

Other thing is, with the shine on his forehead, it seems like the wings should have a stronger highlight.

Thirdly, is it just me or is his arm a lot smaller than in was in the original? (in the original it was the same length bent at the elbow as the new arm is at full extension)

The wings need a dark outline to fit in with the rest of the sprite.... Use the darkest blue
