What is that thing next to the face?

It sorta resembles a woman bending over... if this is the case are we not supposed to start the thread with a [nudity] tag?

Pixel Art / [C+C] ARPG NPCs (2 so far..)
« on: August 16, 2011, 09:25:15 am »
Hi, I wasnt sure whether or not I should make a seperate thread for the NPCs but it seems appropriate so I went ahead and done it anyway, otherwise the other thread for the main character may get even more cluttered than it is already.

so here they are:

and heres an example of them on that "less than perfect" tile set i created:

Of course I need to start work on sprites for the other directions, but lets get these ones correct first.
Problem Areas (I can see)
- Oldman
I tried to create some of those baggy trousers and make them look somewhat like a dirty cream but i I dont think I suceeded, what do you think? Also he is supposed too look like he is huddled over with his arms behind his back but i dont think I succeded here either.
- The females dress is fine except from where she goes down it looks like a flat disc, any suggestions as to why this is? Perhaps I should add some sort of motion to the bottom of the dress? its looking kinda static

Ive tried multiple times to fix these errors but all efforts failed. I look forward to your c+c
Thanks.

Pixel Art / Re: Help Clouds.

I dug around for a reference you could use, and I particularly favour this style of cloud, though clouds are one of those things that come in many different flavours so it really is best that you try to create your own clouds or pick your own reference and then ask here.

Im not the best but I had a quick go:

With some work it could be improved substantially.
I did it by first grabbing a large round brush (non-antialised of course) using my pen tablet to create a random fluffy shape (you could also try creating various overlapping ellipses), then i went in with the second of the two shades and begin to shade some hemi-spherical shapes in, done.

I like it, very nice :)
Though i will say one thing, the shading on the sail, its not working for me, I cant work out if the wind is blowing the sail towards or away from me.
That is all :)

EDIT: And another thing, the guy with brown hair.. his mouth area isnt very readable, I assume he has a tash but i had too zoom in closer to see the faint gray/red tounge

What I do to remove the effect is to use something like this:

I don't follow the lines everytime, I just use them as a guide, as in how it should look, I am really not an expert I have seen better ways of doing it, yet I don't know them, but for me the circle covers most of the basic tiles. If you really want to remove the pattern you should try to use an 8x8 grid.

Ah that is much easier to use than what I had thanks :) and yeah my intention was only to use the lines as a guide also.
Using an 8x8 grid is an interesting idea, though it would be expensive (the engine would have to process n^2 vertices as a result), I tried coming up with various ways to work around this but each solution ive suggested i soon find out that it is either still too slow or too expensive in terms of memory.. there might still be a way so ill see if i can figure it out.

If I were to use an 8x8 grid, what would the tile template look like? The same as what you have there?

I made an edit:

And as I just upload I decide to check some references online.. seems I may have got the "lift" in the "feet" the wrong way round (sorry im not at all musically inclined, thats my brothers thing, im art (in the traditional sense) and tech).

EDIT:

I think it's worth trying just having them move up and down with his chest and shoulders. If that looks awkward to you, maybe a little bit of inward motion to show flexing? I'm not sure.

Ok so i took your advice, and produce another animation, im not sure if this one is still "dancey" but I think its an improvement.
I also smoothed out the animation of the hair a by adding a 3rd frame of change instead of just alternating between the two.

Thanks again for all the comments :) it is helping

In the idle animation, with his arms swinging from side to side like that, he looks kinda like he's bopping to some music.

Get rid of that, though, and it'll look good.  :y:

You dont find it charming?
Yeah I know what you mean, but at that size its very very difficult for me to breathe life into an Idle state, with the arms moving it looks very static, I did try to subpixel a small amount of movement but that didnt go to well.. anything you might suggest i do with his arms to make him less "lala" and more "grr"?

To get rid of the grid, I think having round corners where the ground and the water meet would be a nice step.
Every like that is exactly straight right now could have more curve orbe jagged to feel more natural.

Ok so I had a go at creating a sort of tile set template which I could use to create the real tiles, this one goes 1/3 of the way to eliminating the grid but the rest is up to me, how I design each tile and the variety of props to break the patterns.
Its a bit difficult to use, i.e. its not always obvious especially when creating awkward curves which tile you should use, I suppose id get used to it after a while, but would have prefered something with a few less "bits and pieces", is there anyway I could optimize this template?

overall the entire tileset is a bit pale in comparison to the character. "..." but it wouldn't hurt to turn down the brightness a notch or two. Aside from that, the grass doesn't look very much like grass, rather just flecks of pixels.

Yeah I though that the colours were quite pale too (or rather the character was too dark in comparison), I was waiting for another to give thier opinion, so thanks :P. The grass is supposed to be "just flecks of pixels" I have seen this kind of thing done before (i.e. I didnt just make it up and go "that'll do donkey!") and its a certain stylized way of doing grass.

Hello, so to go along with my character (the thread for which can be found here) for this supposed ARPG I have started developing a few simple tiles.

While I do like these tiles, I think they are a little too stylized for the game I have in mind and would like to attempt eliminating the grid. Which tiles will I need to help with the grid problem?
Alnother reason I am uploading this quick set is that in the other thread someone wanted to know what the character would look like on a background so the colours could be judged (I personally think the character is a little too dark).

Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks.
