Schoolboy

on: May 12, 2007, 04:58:53 pm

Based off of an older and taller version of myself. First sprite since I broke my hand and now that I can't do anything im spending my week with spriting and drawing so I wanna get better this week. D:

I'm not sure if I'm getting anatomy right so I need a bit of help of that.

Any crits wanted, edits are cool too.

It looks good to me so far. I haven't taken the time to do specific measurements of anatomy to see if it all lines up but as an overall it works pretty well.
- His left arm may be a little short though. I believe it should come to around mid thigh.
- Should strap may be a bit thin.

Make sure to keep in mind lighting when rendering the rest of the piece. Seems to be a top right light source.

Let's see how this piece turns out.

Well this is a pixel-art forum, we do things on the pixel level and not with airbrushing/color reduction.

cyberjobe, next time you post make sure it's worth something and doesn't detract from the topic at hand.. this is Ryudo's thread afterall.
eck, he must've changed the image without changing its url.

Ryudo, i'm loving the sprite. His legs feel a little too bent maybe, at least, it's an odd way to stand i think. The farthest leg sticks out a bit too much, and i think ruins the flow of the sprite. I imagine a line curving like ( across his body. Perhaps straighten that leg? Can't wait for an update!  :y:

It does, but it's the method you use to create the art which defines what type of art it is. If you're using brushes and color reduction or otherwise techniques. It's a bit of a "cheat" if you're trying to call it pixel art.

I'm not too much of an artist myself, but it's the only way you'll get better. As for my opinion, when mixing different tools like, using brushes on pixel art...I don't think it'll turn out well unless you're a seasoned artist is all. I think it's a terrible practice overall. If you're going to brush art. Brush the whole thing. Friend of mine has done brushed, 3D and pixels as well and I don't see him often or at all mix any of these and his art is more often than not beautiful.

on the pose; I would say the legs are a little too far apart, I really like the lines and the style, but for someone just standing with a relaxed looking upper body, his legs look too "aggressive" (as if he were ready to pounce on someone), and his right arm may be too far fowards as well.
