General Discussion / Re: Doll Poll

Doll sites tend to have a pretty consistant middle ground in quality.

I think the average doller is better at shading hair and elaborate cloth folds.
pkmays and Wayuki are correct. This proves to be true in my experience: Consistency can partly be chalked up as having the benefit of good parts: A good template can carry a work to an extent. But Dollers that are trying to develop their skill really do seem to have a faster learning curve than your average pixel artist: You can't really avoid learning to shade clothing due to the subject matter. That said, it's not as open-ended as pixeling in general and only the leaders of the medium are genuinely learning anatomy and proportion like a regular pixel artist by doing all of the work. I wish more pixel artists here who found themselves in a rut would do some doll work. It would seriously help you, rather than hatin' because some people in doll and edits communities spoil it for the others! I hope more Doll artists show up considering the trends.

still a WIP hurr hurr  :P

It doesn't hurt to post things if you need some critique, but you really should finish and then post.

BTW, Schu, I really like yours. I should have mentioned that earlier. It's perfect as a Dragon Warrior monster or something.

The B.O.B.'s makes me never want to go sea diving.  :o

Dolls are a template driven medium. Some people create nude or blank figures, and people customize them, mostly by coloring and adding accessories. It's similar to doing 'Edits', though Dolls are typically not ripping commercial game art in the process.

General Discussion / Re: Hue/saturation adj. unsensitive palette.
« on: November 09, 2006, 05:13:42 pm »
One solution is to create art without consideration of hue shifting or atmosphere, then apply a highlight blend and an atmosphere blend to your work. That way you can have a master sprite, which is as unbiased as possible.

Yes, facial features are not easy to see. Don't be afraid to use sharper facial details at this scale.
Here's an edit showing what I would consider doing:

While ultra contrasted, ultra saturated sprites are not recommended, you wouldn't want a character that was much less contrasting than the backround, in most cases, so you'd have to keep that in mind and try to create backgrounds that avoid strong contrasts, especially the use of black outlines and sharp details, because that can make it hard to see the main character also.

You're making progress with the animation. I look forward to seeing more stuff, huge.

General Discussion / Re: How did you find out about Pixelation?
« on: November 08, 2006, 05:32:17 pm »
PixelJoint is awesome. I believe PJ is a stepping stone between Pixelation and DA: People seem to have a notion of 'intimidation' about Pixelation, but have grief about the poor representation of Pixel Arts at DA, so PixelJoint is meeting an important demand by creating a very welcoming environment for casual pixelers or those who want a gallery system like DA, but catered towards pixeling.

but seriously pep  :P, why all the polls recently?
I could say that it was for the staff to get to know what the members are like, but that wouldn't be the truth of it at all since polls don't do justice compared to getting to know people on an individual basis. I did it for the general interest, discovering forum trends that show how Pixelation relates to the rest of the internet. I also did it, subsequently, for all of you guys, because I think this information is going to prove somewhat useful in the near future.
