Instead of taking a shortcut and adding curtains, I would suggest to you to take on the challenge of making it feel calm. If you plan to make pixel art be it hobby or pay, mood is a key factor to get a grasp of.

Check Harold Speed on calm and energetic lines
: try emphasising harmonising parallels, variations on a theme; de-emphasising conflicting junctions, spikes 'n flourishes etc.
Basically less constrast/extremes, same with values and chroma, as you mostly seemed to have intuited already.

Hey there, as I had promised I will re-work on this and so I am.
I recently been to Leh, Ladakh which is full of Himalayan Ranges and is really beautiful place with sense of calmness all around which helped and motivated me to rework on this.
I know this maybe a step back but here's what I seen there and so applying it:
