Hmm... The sword seems too big.

Epic.

How do you wish to improve this?

Grass is a timeless pixel art topic. The almighty grass tile.

Two very quick thoughts:

1. The macro shape of the land is carved out by the grass. The overall land has it's own shape and is carved and lit as its own large object.

2. What you've got on your's is a dark background with some darker color strands.
What I would suggest is the ground is actually darker, because less light makes it through the grass cover.
Instead, each strand of grass , and patches are lit up as their own thing.
Some strands of grass are burried deeper while other strands overlap them.

Here's roughly what I mean:

Hope this helps breathe some life into your grass!  :y:

The music just turns me onnnn ( sorry I had to, getting some JGR vibes)

So my first question is why a white background with a gray ladder and a gray throwie tag?
This is the 21st century, this is pixel art. Each pixel is formed with tiny bright lights. Why not leverage the medium and push it to a lush vibrant, highly saturated look by adding some color? Even if you are trying to keep the drab green military look of MGS you could still find some bright colors. But I digress, this is mostly taste, not so much technique.

My only technique tip is to "blend" some of the frames so that it's a motion blur swoosh instead of making it accurate and precise each frame. (I'm sure there is a more professional term for this I'm hoping somebody can inform us with...) I found this article searching "motion blur animation" and it's what I mean: http://www.finalformgames.com/uncategorized/style-study-motion-blur-in-street-fighter-3/

It lets you put oomph and emphasize the motions.

This is a nice edit pistachio!

Harsher contrast between darks and lights really forces the shapes to be carved out. This is very nice!

I am somewhat philosophically pondering about the simplification however. I need to mentally wrestle with realistically trying to show what's there and how to symbolically reduce it to it's essence. Must think about this...

And to answer your question, I'm back at the dojo to improve myself and share where I can with others. I want to make the most of what I've got with what's in front of me.     (...that and I've been putzing with RPG maker and "art" in general lately. I do boring commercial layouts all day for work and it's refreshing nostalgia just to do stuff for the art of it.)

I appreciate your reply!

Cheers!

Hey folks,

I tried to pixel again, first time in a million years. I want to make an RPG character 32x32. Here he is:

Tell me how you think it can be improved! C+C  ;D

This was my reference and inspiration: http://www.monkeyinthecage.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/DnD_Art-Caldwell_Bruenor-737x1024.jpg

Hi iSpring,

This is interesting. I'm wondering about the context, what is this for? I makes me think of an old RPG with front view battles.

What program did you make this in?

One of the first things I notice is there's a lot of blank canvas space. First easy improvement you can make is crop that baby down to the essential space only. In Photoshop this is easy with the crop tool. If you're in something else, it might be under canvas size or something like that. I think you've got about 150px x 150px here.
The reason you don't want so much blank space is that it makes the file size larger, and the art of pixels is all about working inside tight restrictions.

You might want to also check to make sure your screen is calibrated, because everything looks a little dark. For example, I'm not a fan of the skin tone, it's far too yellow. Here's what it looks like when it's brightened up some:

Cheers!

Hey! Exciting!

I remember helping on one back in 2010-ish but nothing really came of it. Maybe it's time to try again.

What's the theme this year?

Jasc Paintshop Pro 7

Pros:
-Nostalgia
-32.05 MB
-http://www.oldversion.com/windows/paint-shop-pro-7-0

Cons:
-Need old windows distro with tiny crt monitor for authenticity (pro?)
-People think you're trolling
