scuba diver

on: December 20, 2008, 09:19:52 am

i attempted to make an old looking scuba suit man. i never really tried to animate, or to sprite GOOD, but im thinking i did a decent job you know?
its only 2 frames, and in total, there are 20 colors, which is a lot better then anything else ive made.

The amount of colours can be dropped to 6 and you would still have the same result.

2 shades of brown, 1 shade for the lighter cloth. Lines in that cloth using the lighter shade of brown, dark brown lines, very bright, but only 1 shade, for hands and window. lighter cloth colour for the 'reflection' blink in the window, black for outlines.

i tried to pull it down to as few as i could and keep the look and feel of the character.

it's pretty rough, but it's just to give an example of a lower color count:

mine (7 colors) <-> yours (20 colors)

With 8 colors I would be able to add the reflexion to the visor, but I wanted to add the face, sorry about that.

Reducing colors can give a better look to the piece, and it makes you think about the way you will use colors, dithering and techniques.

Congratulations! This is the 'aha'-moment many pixel artists need to really understand the power of mastering your restrictions! With this, you are on your way to something great! Now study the edits you've got, try to improve on the original piece and, of course, ask for help if anything is unclear (:
