Well cartoonish can vary alot in shading and texture, etc. So it can be hard to give advice on that, I personally would put your colours more to work by upping their contrast, either that or strip some colours away, theyre almost invisible.
The perimeter is
very jagged and speckled, smoothen it out. I also think the roots could be bigger/cover more area.
