Pixel Art / Re: Pixel Character Art

Wow gosh that edit helped so much, thank you! I took your advice and made some reference pictures, but I found my original pose with the knife sticking outwards from the hand pretty awkward to do so I lowered the angle. I think the hair and face are still a little wacky but I feel a lot better about the clothes.

I think Atnas is right but you've still made great progress. Perhaps make your canvas a little bit bigger; that way you could add a bit of shoulder on her right arm and the hair wouldn't be running into the edge. It also looks like her legs are not quite lined up under her torso. It seems that it's an artifact of the clothing so maybe rethink the edge of the skirt by her left leg?

As for the mouth I'd suggest making the top not perfectly horizontal to start. See how the character in your image has the corners of her mouth turned down? It might make it look a bit less sticker like. Keep at it!

Pixel Art / Pixel Character Art

So this is my first real attempt at pixel art:

I started with a 500x500 sketch, scaled it down to 150x150, and then cropped it to 100x150. I ended up abandoning my line art though and went with just building up the colors and adjusting as I went. I wanted to give it kind of a spooky vibe so I went with the candle lighting, but I don't think I pulled it off very well. Maybe adjusting the colors would help? I was also struggling with creating any sort of texture on her clothing--I feel like she's wearing spandex :(

Thank you for your time,
SARS

I'm with Lachrymose here, you should go with whatever size you feel most comfortable with. Depending on the way you're going about making your game and the application you're interested in (Are you using RPG Maker? Writing your own engine? Is it for mobile devices or is it designed for a computer screen?) you may find some sizes easier to work with than others, but the truth as I know it is that you can pick your size and adjust your code to fit.

If you don't know what you're most comfortable with, pick a simple concept and try both to see which you like the most.

I personally prefer Postimage: it's simple, no account necessary, and most importantly I've never had an image link break.

Hello everyone,

So I'm SARS or Sarah, whichever you prefer. I've been doing traditional art for awhile now but digital art, and specifically pixel art, is pretty new to me. I'd like to become comfortable enough to put together enough art assets for a small game, but I've found it very frustrating to try to switch mediums from physical to digital. Finding this community feels like a big break to me and I'm looking forward to learning with all of you!

I'm hoping to have my first piece uploaded tomorrow so keep an eye out ;)
