Pixel Art / [WIP] Boss monster
« on: August 18, 2009, 04:00:43 am »
I figured I've finally hit a point in my project where I really could use some advice, so I'm coming to you guys for the first time.
Long story short, I'm making a video game with some friends, I got the monsters. The animations are very short, not intended to look super perfect, not to mention our due date is in about 6 weeks.

I need some help with the boss.

Here he is.
I'm stuck on the outline (I know, so soon to be stuck).
I'm wanting his fingers to have a long sort of pointy look, but I just can't figure them out, I'm horrid at hands. I'm sure there's something else wrong here, but I'm kind of working from the middle out, hence the messiness on the top and bottom. The arms might even clash a bit with his stomach, but I tried to find a sort of middle ground between long and strange and thick. The "shoulder pads" are meant to be like knots to help make animation easier (not sure if it will).
I'm just at a wall right now, the solution is probably staring at me in the face but I'm just not seeing it.

I know the rules said I need to put out an effort but I'm super new to this whole style and have had tons of other resources to help me thus far... I haven't found anything so far to help me with this guy, so I'm sorry if this isn't much to go on. :(

Anyway, you might be wondering "why is he so small if hes a boss?" Well hes going to be inflated by 6 times this size, so every pixel would be more like a 6x6 square block brush or something.
This is because we wanted the monsters to look very blocky and simplistic, like inflated nintendo sprites or something (its specific to the story of the game).

Sorry, I'm not sure what all I"m supposed to explain in my first post, I think I covered everything.
Thanks for you time! :D

Pixel Art / Re: WIP tree - C&C?
« on: August 08, 2009, 06:14:14 am »
I can't find anything I would change, so I'd say that's a good start.
It did look a bit lopsided to me, but I figured I'd see how you want to make your trunk look in case you're having the same thought I am.
Can't wait to see more details!

Pixel Art / Re: Some of my pixel work

I wonder if this helps?
I tried not to saturate it so much, but I wonder if this help bring him a bit closer to what you guys are talking about color wise. Maybe if he took the darks and the lights and tweaked them himself to be a bit more obvious.

I'm fairly new to pixel art, so some of this may not be relevant.

The background looks very blurry, like you took the paint brush and then smudged it to look like grass/mountains, which I think makes it look strange since the rest of it is pixel art.
Your character look nice, the bird looks cute too, but the tree is kind of under-detailed compared to the bird, the trunk and the character. I would also put the bird in a different spot, maybe put some leaves in front of it so it doesn't look like its sitting right on the outside of the canopy of the tree.
I would also  move the tree a bit more into the foreground so it doesn't look like its sitting right on top of the ground.
Speaking of the ground...
Its just so... flat. Maybe you could make it look a bit bumpier?
I would also work on a tile or something to but in between the two ground tiles, the change from "top ground' to 'bottom ground' is super abrupt.

That's all I can see though, but again I'm pretty new to this so the others would probably have better advice than me. I just figured I'd state what I'd change. ^__^

Good luck!

I think it looks great. I would suggest using the less saturated color pallet of the girl on the left though, this new one seems a little bright.
I like her curves, she looks more realistic but not fat or "chibi" or anything, more womanly. Its great!

EDIT:
Actually, I love the splicing ndchristie did there, I'd say that's the best so far.
