Pixel Art / Re: hood [Finished?]
« on: April 29, 2007, 04:41:56 am »
I still think it could use some work. I don't like the extreme ditheryness of the hood, especially since the other parts have like about 4 or so colors each. Pretty good job with the face itself, though!

If you really wanted to reduce the palette, I got it down to 8 (Which includes the background color) by using the same colors for the skin as it is in that hood stripes things (I don't know what they're called). You don't have to, especially if you're not limited by colors.

I added a bit of saturation to the skin colors, I found them a bit too unsaturated for my tastes. So, here's my edit. Also added a bit of contrast, I love contrasty colors. I also liked Ejay's edit. You could even learn from Overkill's edit, perhaps not by the palette colors, but how it's done.

I don't use Photoshop for sprite work, so no psd file for them.

The Sky, Grass, and Water got merged with some other stuff and I didn't save the original layers. I did save the tree layers though.

The comments here have been very useful, thanks for them! (Though I do want to make other backgrounds...)

Alright, awesome. I worked on it some more, and added a Sky:

Worked on the water too, hopefully it's better now.

Awesome, that helped a lot!

Alright, so I tried fixing it up and this is what I have.

Thanks for the comments!

Sure, I could add sparklies to the water, I like sparklies.

As for the long shadows for the trees, you mean the 2 trees on the right side next to the big tree? Just want to make sure before I go off to make changes. And which trees are you referring to as being viewed from slightly above? I don't really notice it, but I guess I'm too used to seeing/making tiles for RPGs or something. But I'll gladly make the changes once I see exactly what you're referring to.

The blueish background is supposed to be water. (Since I had to basically make up that part, I think it probably didn't turn out as well as the rest)

Here. I didn't want the people or the buildings/benches in the background either, so I got rid of those.

Something I'm working on for a project (Basically taking a photo and making a pixel art scene of it, but also removing the trash and stuff that's in the original photo) . 17 colors total. Feedback/comments/critiques encouraged!

Okay, thanks!

I only have a few crits/comments;
1) In the Forest Area, the water looks a lot like the grass, just a different colour. You should try to make this more uniqe.
2) With all of your tiles, they still seem a bit gridd-y. You've done pretty well there, but there is still room for improvement Wink
3) The trees in the Forest Area also look like they aren't really rooted into the ground. At the moment, it looks like they have just been put there. Maybe adding a little bit of dirt around the base of the tree could help? Just fiddle with it and see what works/what doesn't.
1) I never based the water on the grass, and it's not a recolor. I'll see what I can do to fix it, though.
2) Yeah, I notice. Evil patterns! I'll fix it up.
3) The palm trees are also meant to work in the sand, but for that I can just have 2 roots, one for grass and one for sand so I can blend them into the tiles better. Good idea though, didn't think of that.

Hi, I'm new here. I've been working on tilesets for a project, so I figured I'd show some of what I have done. Critiques and feedback welcome, I know there's some things that I could fix.

This is a Forest area.

Snowy Mountains.

Let me know what you think of them!

Looks much better now, quite an improvement.

I like the sunset, but fear it doesn't match the mood of the piece, and may cause problems with the lighting.
Yeah, I agree, unless you want to go and change around the lighting, you should probably remove it. I like the stormy skies touch though.
