new Nicolaides exercise type is:
Called "modelled drawing". Similar to the "weight" and "cross contour" exercises, combining the two by first quickly bulking in the masses but without darkening like before, just preparing a rough base, then cross contouring over it vertically and horizontally, applying more pressure (gets darker) where surface curves into depth(away from us) and less pressure where surface curves out of depth (towards us), while imagining to touch the model and feeling the volumes as in the cross contour exercise. I dub this the "pillow shading" exercise because of the similarity of the results to that frowned-upon shading technique... but it has its' use, builds a deeper understanding of surface curvature, thinking about modelling the figure with clay again.
