Pixel Art / Re: Top-Down Mockup
« on: July 11, 2010, 02:33:24 pm »
That's not a bad plan, but my original concept for the background was more based around a simplified version of pretty much any of the mechanical DoDonPachi backgrounds.

Here's a bit of an update. I made an attempt at increasing the amount of uninterrupted colors on the ships, but they just ended up looking... odd. Made a new coin animation as well.

EDIT: ... And I'm legitimately embarrassed by my attempt at rock formations  :'(

EDIT 2: In the first image there's now an experimental HUD setup.

That's part of my problem at the moment; I'm trying to give the background some purpose (as well as make it a little less busy, right now I feel like it's too distracting).

Any ideas how I could optimize that?

I'll give it another shot =s. When you sketch on paper how large do you go?

For stance study of non-realist characters, a 3.5" notepad is usually enough. Something as simple as a round head, triangular (or cross-shaped) chest and some legs can already provide help. Last time I tried seriously it turned into this and that.

I usually just use a normal sheet of paper, or some larger than average drawing paper. I sketch small sketches until I've pretty much filled the page, and if I'm still not happy by then I move on to a new sheet.

I agree. My specialties in terms of art came from repeatedly sketching until I got the final result I wanted, and then spriting it up the way it came out on paper, with final tweaks. It can seriously help you get a better grasp of the basics. Because eventually (something else worth pointing out here), I was able to just jump into spriting without having to sketch it out on paper first, and although it still helps from time to time if I'm really stuck, that ability can be a great boon (and certainly reduce the amount of time you sink into this hobby).

I'd say in your case more straight lines and a bit of dithering here and there would do these good.

Very beautiful and provocative. The shades are perfect, and your distinction between background and foreground, I think, it spot-on. Well done.

They do look much better, but they still need more depth. The cracks on the tops and sides deserve to be a bit darker, if you're really trying to emulate Indigo's feel.

There's my two cents. Not sure if it's as worthy of notice as it might sound, I but I figure it's worth a shot.

Keep at it!

Pixel Art / Top-Down Mockup
« on: July 05, 2010, 05:43:22 am »
Decided to do something I've never done before; a mockup. I didn't stray too far out of my comfort zone, though, as I'm making a top-down retro-styled game using Arne's 16-color palette.

Here's the basic spritesheet thus far.

And here's a test with a background idea.

Any C&C would be appreciated muchly. I'll update it every now and then with more stuff. General mockup tips are also a necessity, since I'm not entirely sure of what I'm doing :/
Thanks!

That's a bit better; you hinted at his chest being slightly more in perspective. He looks great, also the scarf edit was a good idea, I failed to notice that before.

::two thumbs up:: :)

Awesome. It's not a bad start on your part, but I zoomed in a bit and it looks like you're using the wrong colors. One of the main differences I see is the fact that the colors on the flat surface on the top of your rock are not bright enough, and the hilights on the ides of the rocks are TOO bright.

Hope that made some sense :/ Good luck!
