Pixel Art / Re: WIP: Watch your back

GOODNIGHTdestroyer and ptoing: Quite unintentional but could well be subconscious influence there, pose is essentially the same except that the arms are in the flipped position.

PS: Your sig quote is originally from Friedrich Nietzsche ;)
Not quite, one letter different, from Aeon Flux (series not movie).

Xion Night: Yes, hopefully that is no longer a problem.

eck: Hopefully fixed now.

Reluctantly cracked open my crappy anat book to rework proportions, thinned arms, adjusted legs and shrunk head. Still not quite satisfied, and head looks a little large yet.
Added a couple of intermediary skin tones.
Much of the base pixelling done, just got to finish pixelling rear limbs, hair, hump and tentacles, then detailing/AA pass.

2^4 - 2 colours.

Very early, just roughed and started pixelling face.

Not happy with proportions so any feedback would be tops. Hands will be shrunk some when pixelled, was originally going to be less human.

2^4 - 4 colours.

senad: No, I could get myself to sit still long enough to get the work lines down, so I modelled it on my pet imp.

Just started pixelling the face, been playing with colour selection a little. Probably change to more conventional colouring once I get bored with it.

Obviously still very WIP, just rough blocked with tablet, no pixels yet.

Just want crits on pose/anatomy before I waste too many pixels on some crapiness, so if you see any major flaws let me know.

I'm not terribly happy the crossed legs, I've tweaked it quite a bit without much success.

Hands, beard, hair, etc., are meant to degenerate into roots/branches.

Reading Barker's Abarat at the moment, so probably more than a touch of Abaratian in this.

I love the character design (it looks familiar, is it based on anything?), and great pixelling.

Not much to crit, but I'm wondering why there are the 8 by 8 blocks in the wings, it makes it look like its for a retro platform, but the same restrictions don't seem to carry through to the body.

EDIT:
Okay I see you've done this kind of thing before.

If Will Smith was in it, it WOULD have been a ridiculous movie.
WOULD have been?  ???

That garrison is definately a Gauntlet clone. I'll have to check it out.

Speaking of amigas...I never used an amiga before, but I tried using WinUAE to try out the free version of Personal Paint to research for my own pixeller, I got PP, WinUAE and various kickstarts, but on booting it always seems to want a disk. The version of PP I've got is just an LHA archive. Do i need to make a disk image? If so how?

EDIT...

And another thing in my research I've also been checking out Deluxe Paint and DP Animate and it put in mind an old piece of soaftware by EA with much the same gui as DP with which you composed simple animations out of premade sprites and backdrops and you could drop in speech bubbles and such. I played with it in primary school. Anyone know what that's called?

Long shadows:
Short shadows:

Okay I'm working on some gauntlet style graphical assets and would like to get the opinions of some people (such as yourself).

Which of the shadows above do you think looks better (never mind the differing tiles, or the quality of the tiles, they are just structural templates so far)? I preffer the first longer shadows and they are at the same scale as those in gauntlet 2. But I would prefer a higher light source generally, and that would mean shadows for the gate tiles would extend over the tile boundaries (not shown).

Do you think an iso view could work for a gauntlet-style game and would it retain the play feel? I'm generally not fond of iso with directional controls (keyboard, gamepad). Do you know of any iso gauntlet-likes that I could try out?

And a couple other related questions.

Do you know of any free gauntlet-like games? All I know of are the old dos games Myrmidon and Boboli.

A long time ago I played a dos shareware gauntlet-like game and am trying to find out what it was called so I can get it. If I recall correctly it has the following features:
* 320 x 200 EGA graphics.
* Single character a wizard.
* Weapons are fireballs of increasing strength.
Tweak anyone's memory?

Wow! I love every part of this except the road's flatness.

Maybe offset it upwards some and bank it up at the sides, or add some gully erosion beside it, to give a greater sense of depth.

I want to play it.
