Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] Carmine (Gears of War)

Nah, the eyes and forehead thing are actually shiny blue, just like the stripes on the shoulders. Dark and gritty games need characters with lights all over them to make them playable.

There's also the shiny little thing on the side of the head, which you should totally try to fit into your version. Asymmetry in design is something I find important to keep even if you're not being completely accurate.

I don't think you should worry about the neck, either. Decide whether you want just a helmet or a full torso shot. In the former case, you don't need to show the neck at all, I reckon, and if you're going for a torso there's a big chance the neck will be concealed by the shadow of the helmet, or the helmet itself, depending on the angle.

Oh snap, Prison Break...

It's official, I'll have no life by the end of this year. See, I used to follow Lost and Prison Break back whenever, back 'ere on Swedish TV which is inevitably a couple of weeks behind the US stuff... and all of my friends download the episodes instead... Do people have no patience at all anymore? Anyway, this fall, some of the awesomest 360 games ever are coming out. And also next year. Very soon, Halo 3 will consume all of my free time. BUT, I also just started watching Heroes which another Swedish channel decided to pick up spontaneously, and I knew I have to see it. Two episodes a week, one on wednesday and one on thursday. Yet another channel are about to start airing Eureka, which looks interesting, and also Dexter which has gotten immense praise from my classmates so I feel I need to check it out. Then Prison Break will return soon, followed by Lost... and Halo 3... and I'll officially have no spare time left at all... I hope none of those shows collide!

Helm - Always on topic, even in the off-topic.

I second the kebab notion.

I am talking more than I'm doing. But like Adrias said, this isn't about what I can or can't do. You're just using this discussion as an excuse to get another chance to gawk at my awesomely awesome art of awesomeness! Bad Helm!

I actually spent about half an hour trying to write that post in a way that WOULDN'T make Helm try to make me prove myself, but I realized it's impossible... so I gave up. I'm still not intending to "prove myself" about anything, because that's completely irrelevant to this discussion.

And I can still blame my inactivity at that there 3D school I've mentioned a thousand times. It's an excuse, but it's true. Even if school allowed me to polish each piece until I think it's worth posting online (of course we don't get that much time), Pixelation still wouldn't be my first choice of forum to spam with polygons. So I'm afraid you still won't see much from me, despite all the gentle nudging.

Recent developments have made me considering making a new avatar though...

No, my anatomy isn't mostly-correct. Far from. But I don't think my style prevents me from learning anatomy. In fact, my style would probably benefit from more practice. That's what I was trying to point out, in response to Zach's always-drawing-similar-faces situation.

I mean, I often draw similar things, too, but that's because I intend to. The other day I actually pulled off a pretty decent giraffe, including strangely-jointed legs, if you must know! Definitely something I'd never done before, and it doesn't look anything like the foxes and stuff that normally spawn from my digital pen. If I have to draw something that doesn't look like a cartoony white fox, I can pull it off.

Besides, even my cartoonish... style... is firmly rooted in reality. Now and then I do check up on anatomical guides and such and refine my own pre-lineart guidelines to be more true to life. I start out all my humanoid drawings with one of those funny and useful skeleton-looking things. You know, lines for limbs, balls for joints, measuring proportions while I try to find a decent pose, that kinda stuff. Muscles and such, I'm not so hot on.  And one thing I know I don't get enough practice with is human faces. But honestly, I don't see myself needing that kind of skills in the near future. I'm happy with what I'm able to do on paper right now, and I don't strive for anything more. Not yet, at least.

That's a restriction, though. Even if I claim I can't draw humans anymore, I can. I just prefer not to. That might be a choice of style. Only being able to draw one type of face sounds more like something you'd wanna practice to get rid of.

It might be easier to try this discussion on another subject, then try to apply it on pixel art. I'm listening to the music from Space Giraffe right now and it occurs to me how very different music can sound, even if it sounds identical to the untrained ear. Little things like whether someone has drums be in the background or foreground, if they use delay or reverb or both, or none. Some people like their synths to oscillate violently so they sometimes blend into the background then fade up to be almost disturbingly loud before fading back again. That's definitely a stylistic choice for an experienced musician. By that time, you know what you like and you tend to stick to that.

In pixel art terms, that makes me think more of subtle things, like... how much you vary hue and saturation between light and dark colors. Someone might always make their shadows blue. Others dislike the blue look and go for a more pastel type feel. I've seen a lot of cases where a piece is improved by giving everything a bit more saturation, turning blacks into pale greys and whites into a dusty yellow and things like that. While it does look good, I personally like to use perfect blacks and whites. I'm not sure why, but I prefer it. I guess that's my style.

Yes, Lair is that bad. Not that I've played it, but I've seen it enough to know. It's such a shame. I mean, it's kinda hard to mess up a concept where you're flying a huge-ass dragon and tearing people apart and stuff. Apparently they thought it was hard to mess up, too, so they... didn't even bother making it controllable.

As for the current standings in the console wars, things are turning out exactly like I said they would. The 360 is in this generation what the PS2 was last generation. The semi-cheap one with inferior hardware but TONS of games, many of which are must-haves.

Only problem is, last generation the Xbox still had Halo, Ninja Gaiden, Splinter Cell and a few crazy awesome titles like that to make sure it could still compete. What does the PS3 have now to match what the Xbox had then? It's not looking good for Sony.

"Style" is why it's okay for Helm's avatar to consist of blue and yellow triangles.

On a more serious note, I don't think style can ever collide with the quality of one's work. If there is a blatant mistake in a piece and someone claims it's their style, then there's a blatant mistake in their style. I think that, if you upload art on galleries or post on forums or anything like that, you're not just making art for the fun of it, you're also making it for your audience to look at. If your audience dislikes something that you like, it's probably worth changing it because more people will find it better. Well, if they're a bunch that are able to give decent critique to begin with, of course. I wouldn't correct my art after DA comments, for example...

I know what my style is like. It's fairly cartoony and usually ends up with tons of sharp edges and corners. I've drawn like that for many many years, and even though my "style" changes constantly, some things never go away. If I sketch something quickly, it WILL have a ton of sharp corners and straight lines. It will also be fairly cartoony. I've never had a reason to incorporate hyperrealism into my art, so I don't really bother. Although, of course, despite all that, the basics are still the most important thing ever. Anatomy, proportions, image composition, if any of that is off, you CAN'T blame it on style, because they're not related.

Unless, of course, it's a specific attempt to make something look bad. Which is sometimes what some people do. I guess that's a style in itself. But! You need to know how to do something right in order to do it really wrong. So if someone, for some reason, wants to draw really badly, they should learn how to draw really good, then consciously do the opposite of that to achieve the proper result.

So, yeah, style never restricts, it's something you constantly build on. Sometimes you can't improve unless you let your style evolve. In fact, I found the best way to improve is to LET your style change in various ways you're not comfortable with.

You guys are totally confusing me. But I do believe the topic somehow bent itself into the nature of states of sexuality. Or any other combination of big words that make me sound like a scientist.

Here's what I think: All creatures are heterosexual, if such a requirement exists (some species are lucky enough that they can do anything with anyone and still have offspring). However, sexual PREFERENCE is a psychological thing. Anyone can turn from anything to anything else given the correct circumstances. That's the crazyness of the mind that I've come to learn pretty recently. The more you're exposed to something, the more you accept it, even if you don't want to accept it. It's like when you hear that stupid goddamn pop song on the radio over and over and it makes you want to poke your eardrums out, but later the same day you find yourself humming it. In a similar way, it is actually possible to suddenly find yourself accepting a preference or fetish or whatever, that you thought you hated by nature. Turns out it's not nature's call, it's psychology. I do believe that might be able to stretch as far as to the very basics of sexuality; whether you're into guys or gals. And, of course, if something happens at a very early age, it's more probable that it'll stick. It's pretty rare for someone to spontaneously flip directions mid-life. But I do believe it can happen, and maybe even by conscious choice, although it's not something I'd like to research further...

Anyway, discrimination? Hating gays? I touched upon that. If you let yourself, you become more tolerant of the concept the more you expose yourself to it. Many people are scared of things like that, though, and don't want to accept it because they think they hate it by nature. I've reacted like that to weird fetishes some of my online friends have been stupid enough to introduce me to. I don't mind them now. Part of me wishes I could go back to hating it, because it's THAT weird, but it's too late now. I accept that stuff. And the more stuff I find myself accepting, the less freaked out I am by any eventual other stuff that I haven't yet been exposed to. I guess that's how crazy fetishes grow... The more you're into them, the easier it is to accept even weirder stuff...

Anyway. I'd consider myself openly bisexual (feel free to disagree about the "open" part though), and I know I haven't always been. It's cute to think that people are born completely neutral, able to go any way right from the start, but I don't think that happens. It is, however, very easy to start to see ounces of truth in what other people say and think. Then, some time later, you suddenly find you've gradually come to accept the sexiness of people in general, even if they're the same gender as you. That's pretty much how it happened to me. I can't remember the first time I accepted what was going on, but I wasn't THAT young. It's quite possible it started much sooner than I can even remember, though... I dunno.

Anyway, living creatures are born with the correct settings to reproduce. Occationally, some animal will make some weird choice that doesn't help at all, but then it's probably just for the fun of it or.. whatever... god, I'm finding it harder to form coherent sentences the more I type... Time for sleep...

WARNING! While I was typing a new reply has been posted! ... Eh, I'll read that tomorrow.

[edit] Oh holy crap, text...! How do I type that much and not remember what I typed afterward?! ... Sleep time! [/edit]

Pixel Art / Re: Pinwheel dreamin'
« on: September 05, 2007, 09:12:08 pm »
The thing about pinwheels is that they're constructed to catch air with one and and cut through it with the other. It might move a little when inhaling, but not much at all.

I also vote yes on the bubble removal thing, it doesn't really make sense to me. I know it's a bit of a symbol, and it's supposed to be cute (even though it always ends up disturbing me), but technically, if the breath is making the bubble grow, then most of the breath wouldn't even reach the pinwheel in the first place...

Also, I think the timing on the wheel needs adjusting. The way it just suddenly snaps into full motion then gradually slows down doesn't seem to match the rate and strength of the breathing.
