Pixel Art / Re: Mock up

JaJitsu, I'm glad you joined these forums!  It's Masna, from TIGs.  Expect a lot of great feedback here.
I like the scene, but it could use a little bit more love.
It's totally up to you, but the sign look a little weird to me.  I made a sloppy edit, but I was thinking something a little more like this.

Thanks for the reply, NaCI.  I took your suggestion even though I was trying to stick to 16x16.  I figured two more pixels wouldn't be the end of the world.

I also upped the saturation on the Caucasian faces.

Pixel Art / Oodles o' Smileys

Hi, I'm back from my months of lurking.  :D
I whipped up a couple of smileys to replace the ugly ones on messenger, but I could really use some C+C as they have some obvious readability issues.

I appreciate the help in advance,
Jared

Pixel Art / Generic Co-op Shmup
« on: November 11, 2009, 02:15:01 am »
In an attempt to better myself in the art of pixels, I'm starting a new sheet of generic shmup assets.  I'm lacking a good chunk of knowledge about pixeltech, so any crits or suggestions would be great!  ;D
Also Note: the background is divided into layers, and will move in parallax.

Oh, very nice!  I agree with Pat Butcher about the objects being washed out, but I personally have no problem with that.
I just think that you could maybe have more vibrant palettes.

Also, the item generator sound pretty cool.  Mind linking it?

Now that camp is over, I'm coming back to this project.  I made some more tile/characters and planned out a story.  As for the time being, what do guys think?

Sorry for the double post, but here's an attempt at a walk cycle.

My animation certainly isn't the best, so again, any c+c would be helpful.

Jad@ Yeah, I know what you mean.  I guess it's just the really appealing flat-shaded aesthetic.  I tried not to rip off Cave Story too much, but I guess it just has that influence.

Thank you so much for the critique, Argyle!  I really had no intention of following gravity in my designs, but yes, it does stick out a little too much.  I'll definitely take your explanations into consideration when doing the final level designs.  ;D

Hey guys!  Thanks for all the replies.

Here are some more mock-ups, this time using the new tiles.

Tom: Seeing as I'm going for tiling and re-usability, I don't think scaling is really an option.

Right now the rock cut-offs looks pretty unnatural, but I'm trying to find a way to fix that while being able to use it in-game in a tiled environment.  Also, the cave entrance tile looks pretty terrible right now.  But once I get back to my computer with photoshop, I'll try and fix that.

Thanks, Christie!  Yeah, they're actually just objects I'm going to use to spruce up the background.
Actually, Cave Story (and I'm sure you sick of hearing this) did a similar thing, and it did seem to work out alright.
