General Discussion / Re: HAPPY BIRTHDAY HELM!!!

Have some cake! There are 576 pieces of cake there, although there are many pieces which are invisible and therefore nonexistant. But a cake with anywhere close to having 576 pieces is a cake better than any cake you could find at your local cakes store. Assuming that cake is still sold in stores. If it is not, consider yourself lucky as cake is probably a hot commodity.

I really like this puppy! He looks so full of life and character. I think that the shading on him is kind of dodgy in some areas. Mostly, the new northeast poses. With the black outlines and the very faint shading on the head, it looks like it's an uncolored line art. Perhaps some more contrast or darker colors on the head would help that.

General Discussion / Re: PARTICIPATE IN LINEART THREAD DECISION
« on: April 17, 2007, 02:53:32 am »
I agree with Xion here. While the current thread is a bit messy, making it mandatory for someone to open a new thread to display line arts is a bit much I'd say. Have two threads for coloring/lines would be a great solution to that. Since most of the lineart that is colored, is done in spare time and for fun, it would be counter-intuitive to turn it into something more. There are already people who make individual topics for linearts they've colored, and I think those who do them seriously and want critique will do that.

I'll have to agree that hourly pricing is the way to go. There are a few instances where it's not, and these are usually just 1 day projects being done for a new client.

I've charged hourly for quite some time now, and not once have I come across somebody asking for loads of paperwork or disbelieving me. The fact of the matter is, if you are reputable and can give a rough estimate of the time it's going to take, most employers won't make a deal out of paying you hourly.

Most of the benefits of hourly rates has been stated so I'll just leave it at that for now.

I really like the colors in this piece, very lively.

I feel that the hud doesn't fit in very well with the rest of the picture. Same goes for the character. Everything else is very bright and cheerful and unique, where as the hud and character look rather uninspired. The AAing on the green circle kind of hides the fact that it's a circle. It looks more like a stop sign/octagon to me.

The tiles look a bit repetitive, as Terley said. Perhaps you can create a few variations to tile together. They also lack depth. the highlighting/shading looks to be more of a pattern than highlighting/shading. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing but it looks like it's struggling to find it's place.

The background mountains do a good job of showing depth though. Perhaps you can use some techniques from the mountains on the foreground stuff. The clouds look cheerful bt kind of like boulders. Maybe go for some softer colors or maybe softer definition.

Overall it's a pretty good piece though.

Pixel Art / Re: Some good ol' fashioned tilesets...tileset *finished*

I tried to brighten the coals Sharm. I also dimmed the mushrooms and added some line variation to the top cliffs.

Anyways...it's pretty much done.

Once again, we have an update. This time there are a lot more objects and things to be seen. I still have to populate it, and probably add a few more knick knacks in it.

That's a pretty nice edit mangust. Definitely has a greater feel of there being lighting. My attempt was a combination of both a halo and the original lighting but the old style kind of got watered down this time around. I think that I'll try and rework a bit more like mangust's lighting.

There's now a rough draft of the mock up as well as some modifications to the tileset.

Uhm, I think that your animations should include more movement. I know you're going for a subtlety type of thing but, it's a bit extreme.

Below are two animations of mine that use the same technique, sparingly. In order for subtle movements to look right, there needs to be more going on. Or else, it'll look like nothing or maybe a moving light source. On top of that, your characters will be lacking in any type of personality besides how it is drawn. Well, maybe that's going a bit far...but right now it's true. Once they run, jump, and die...then they'll have some personality.
