The animation is beauuutiful. The stretch frames are terrific.

The blood raining down would be cool - more than anything, though, I'd love to see the knight fall over at the end.

heh i feel picky today :)

the non human sprites have different light sources each time.

when you have them facing SW the light source is from top left.but when you have them facing NW the lights source comes from the top right :P

Well, yeah.. but when you're doing iso sprites, they have to flip (unless you feel like doubling your workload). Any suggestions on how to get past that? I'm pretty sure iso stuff from other games is lit in the same way, but it's not as noticable because the sprites are considerably smaller.

Should our lightsource be coming from a different spot? Should it be casting fewer shadows?

My friend and I have been working on these for awhile now, and we're at the point now where some outside opinions & advice would be a huge help. These are the naked base sprites for four races, and are based on the sketches below (linked instead of img'ed because they're large):

Finally, some exploration done recently on the shading and shaping of the human sprite (original marked with an X):



We're looking for comments & critiques on any or all of them. I think we're at the point where we might be focusing on the wrong things, I feel like there are still some glaring errors in them but I can't put my finger on exactly what's wrong. We've just been staring at them for too long.. a fresh pair of eyes would really help. Edits are definitely welcome.

It depends on what restrictions you're working under. You don't have to keep one palette for an entire city, but rather each of your tiles should function off a specific palette (ie, 4 colors per 8x8 tile or something similar). What are you planning on coding the game in? Flash, or something else?

It's over-dithered at the moment. Generally, the less dithered a "metal" surface is, the easier it is to make it shiny. Also, you're shading the helmet, but not the little bumps and spikes on it. Do the whole thing. And the inside of the helmet is lit inexplicably - if you only have one light source, and it's coming from top left, that interior should be dark.

There are four or five in the top 25 that I don't think deserve to be there, but for the most part I think it's a solid list. I would've put some of Ahruon's animations in the top spots, as well, if only because small, well-animated sprites are what interest me the most right now. I feel like making more with less is a huge part of pixel art - and whether that means vibrant animation in a tiny sprite, or an extremely limited palette (Helm's spartan is incredible), that's what would get my vote.

P.S. Akzidenz, I did not know Hugo was blind. I noticed he was the only character with his eyes closed half the time, and how they were pure white when opened. Never knew the poor, big guy was blind though. Crazy. Him and Urien(everyone's favorite over-tanned, thonged, master of disaster) were always my favorites. Though I'm pretty sure my skillz are pretty rusty at the game now.(I also read in rottentomatoes.com, that capcom was planning to redo another movie variation of Street Fighter, centering the plot line around Chun-li...Hope it doesn't bomb like it's ultimate crap-ass Van-Damme predecessor.)

Yeah, someone pointed that out to me once. I don't know if it's official SF canon, but if you look at all of his animations it makes sense. Also, his girlfriend/ho, Poison, is a transsexual (and that actually is canon, believe it or not). Shame you don't live in California, we could've thrown down. :) My main character's been Oro for over a year now, I'm finally getting to the point where I don't get my ass handed to me by the pros 10/10 matches. Urien's crazy fun though, and a bitch to play against.
