just wanted to pipe in and say that this is adorable.

That said I think the sky could use one less layer of clouds, it's making it look a bit blurry.

Lovely image and a lovely edit from Decroded.

One thing i'll mention in is the business of your rendering.

This is a hard issue to explain but you get this problem from a lot of early to mid 19th landscape artists. They had a tendency to render every detail on the scene with equal importance, this made lovely but in some ways incredibly uncanny and ugly works.  The human eye in fact sees a lot more like the impressionists would later paint similar scenes. Broad strokes, implied details, and sharper focus only on the focal points of the image.

Decrodeds edit is an improvement in this regard, even though its a bit rough look at the way he tackles the grass; drawing clusters and directions over each individual blade. Often all we need to read that something is there is a hint of light or shadow, a touch of texture. Decroded's tree benefits in a similar way, despite being ostensibly less rendered.

This doesn't mean you shouldn't render things. Just that you should treat the light in your image in a more holistic way.

I hope that makes sense.

The colours in the shading on this latest image are very close together, to the point that they are almost redundant. More contrast may be helpful.

The characters are also suffering from mitten hands and feet a little, this is a tough issue as pixeling hands is difficult at this resolution, but maybe look at some of 1ups characters?

If you ignore the head size his bodies there are almost the same size as yours, and i've always found his method for tackling hands to be pretty elegant.

I'll echo what echo said.

Nicely designed character, def has some personality with the costuming.

In terms of perspective, either the shoulders and face or the feet and hands are off perspective, depending on what perspective you go for.  Currently If you connect foot to foot or hand to hand by drawing a line you would use a slightly diagonal line, but if you connect the shoulders or eyes you would use a horizontal line. This mean your image is kind of on two perspectives at once. One trick I could suggest is drawing concentric circles from the base up at the perspective you want, this can help act as a mental guide.

Good start though, looking forward to seeing progress.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Enchanted Room
« on: January 08, 2015, 01:49:06 pm »
Hello All,

So I'm trying to get this all polished up, eventually it's going to be a full mockup but for now i'm just trying to complete the room.

Current Edit:

A little hard to read but its a dungeon room giving way to something more fairytale-esque if that gives some context.

Still a ton to do, but I thought this might be a good stage to iron out compositional issues or pallet issues. (or anything else)

Looking forward to your thoughts :)

Very cool to see a game with a POC hero ellian.

@PixelPiledriver
Ty! Really digging the patterning in ur cookie specter there.

@Rav
I always love reading your breakdowns, but tbh it's a little hard to judge you work without knowing more about your artistic intention. Are you trying for pure aesthetics? I feel like your going for something a touch more complex but I might be over reading.

@Yellow
Jeez tough pallet, doing well though!

So i've been trying my hand at something more concept arty, big WIP but i feel like i've hit a wall and need people to tell me how to make this more interesting.

(it's a centaur lady)

I know big last minute crits can be annoying, but that head is straight up tiny. It'd be a shame not to fix it as the rest of the picture is looking quite nice!

great progress! keep pushing it, Piledriver's process sounds like a really good (though time consuming :P) approach.
