Pixel Art / Re: [C+C] 16 12-bit colors swordsman

Edit:

I looked at some relevant swords and shields and realized that it would be cooler if he were holding a larger, flatter shield.  The hilt shouldn't be that protruding either.

The second one looks very nice, the palette gives it a grim look (it's quite cold and whatnot)
Thanks, grim sounds just like how I want it.

In the palette, you have many colors that are too similar in value.  This leads to redundancies in your piece.  Also you should consider how your sprite will fare on different colored backgrounds.  For example, Pixelation's background is quite neutral and yet your sprite is having trouble showing up against it.
Thanks for the feedback.  I think I managed to space the colors a bit and I even eliminated one.  I also added some outlines to try to attack the problem with blending in with the background.

Yes, he's wearing a necklace but it's not going to be glowing in shadow.  And yes he has strands of hair but we don't need to see them individually when zoomed out like so.  I gave it an outline, which is up to you obviously.  But at 1x, mine's showing up more clearly.  Another thing you should get in the habit of is recycling colors.  The brown on the pants and the purple on the shield for example.  We know his shirt is not brown, or purple.  But put them in between the light and dark shades of green, and the transition is much smoother and the shirt still reads green.
The necklace I really should've gotten right from the start, thanks for pointing it out.  The strands in the hair I'd like to keep, I think of some kind of dreads-like thing going on, maybe dirt or something. At any rate, he doesn't have a steady supply of soap.  I really like how you can magic colors around like that and want to learn how to pull it off, so thanks for that input too.

What kind of game are you considering?
Nothing that special, just some personal project for honing my programming and pixeling skills.  I'm thinking a platformer with some special sparring moves involving the shield.

Edited the sword and hand, added some outlines, and tried a cleaner approach on the shirt and pants. The goal is to use him as the main character in a game, but we'll see where that ends up. ;D

Please, critique and comments are very welcome! How's the palette working out for example?

It's very clean and readable. What's the application for it?

I for one prefer the asterisk to be centered vertically, and the underscore to hug the bottom, but that's just personal preferences. I also like zeroes with a dot inside in place of the diagonal line. If I should be picky, the diagonal on the N is a bit wonky, but I can't see how it would be improved.

Edit: Phlakes edit made those points a lot better.

It's been quite a while since I posted here, but I would like some critique on this piece. It's composed of 16 12-bit colors where one is transparency. I'm having some trouble finishing the sword, so any thoughts on that would be appreciated.

I explored a cleaner approach and put a bit of depth on the wall.
I don't know about the lights, I can't make it look good with dithered transparency so I just made them glow. Couldn't find any reference at all either. The images I found either did the glow thing or had nothing around the light at all.
Feel free to edit if you have any ideas!  ;D

Posted some updates after the monitor calibration. Added some more colours and highlights, have not done any more animation though.
The updated contrast is now roughly how it looked on my screen from the start.  :)

Am I going in the right direction?

I did a monitor calibration and it's worse than I thought. Now I just have to find the guy - he kinda disappeared.  :-[

This is a lot of good critique!

rikfuzz: I see what you mean with the animation and I've had some time to do a quick edit (no update) but I saw it needs a bit more work than just shifting the gun a bit. The transition frame is a must.
I don't really know how to make the lights cast a field of light in a good way though as I had in mind to make the foreground with the lights, the fence and the backdrop scroll independently and not use any alpha channel black magic... But I'll see what I can come up with, any ideas are welcome.

Jad: I'm at another computer now with different screen settings and here the contrast is a total disaster! I'll have to check the calibration on my screen.
I agree with what you're saying, that's some good stuff, will work on it.

I've not done much art before at all so your compliments mean a lot.
But Jad... I'm sorry, what do you mean by construction skills?  :D

Mockup:

Our hero - running inside a green box until the end of time:

Updated the post with the current firing animation:

And a compilation to see how it looks, and a faster firing animation:

I'm thinking of making a platformer just for fun and practice, so I started drawing a mockup. It's supposed to take place in the somewhat near future I think.

C+C very welcome, pick it apart and feed it to the dogs please.  :D

I think they look awesome.
One thing I'm thinking of though is that they don't have a specific light source. They could possibly use some more contrast, at least the T-Rex - he looks a bit flat.
Interested in seeing some more  :y:
