Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] Another portrait (nudity)
« on: December 30, 2013, 07:37:15 pm »
first, here Ive done a rough paint over

okay imageshack keeps deleting my image (because nudity?) let me find a different host

I didnt touch the face but the body has some proportion issues.  First check the height of the left (our left) shoulder in relation to the chin.  Then notice the height of the right shoulder in relation to the left.  Once you raise the left shoulder, see if it appears to be coming out far enough.  Now check the distance between the chin and the top of the boobs, use the head as a reference.  Now check the length of the boobs compared to the head, you actually made them too small.

Now dont think about lines as outlines, but rather as thin shadows.  In the case of deliniating the stomach with the bottom of the boob you dont really need a line, just a darker shade underneath.  well the edit should explain the rest (looking through my folder this is the 5th edit of yours Ive done  :) )

oh and fix your link to the reference please.

the problem I see with it is that in yours the flames pause their upward movement for a frame or 2 before the smoke continues to go upwards.  IN the metal slug explosion everything has a continuous upward movement before fading out.

I like the head rotation you added.  One thing I just noticed that looks off is on his right arm, when hes bringing it back theres 1 frame where suddenly the sword is angled forward.  I think this is throwing it off.

I made this from scratch for practice.  Its not that good but I might as well post it, maybe itll help somehow.  I thought on yours the arms didnt swing enough, but I made mine swing too much.  So atleast it shows you what not to do haha.  I tried giving him more wolf like legs.  I was gonna give him a tail too but didnt want to spend the extra time on it, but I think it would look cool.

for the sword attack, as said already, his body is far too stiff.

well one issue you have is inconsistant outlining.  The skin is very light yet has a very dark outline, whereas the dress is dark and its outline is lighter than that of the skin.  You should either outline everything consistantly the same value.  OR make the outline for each local color the same relative darkness to the thing being outlined.

Also you have almost no contrast at all.  I couldnt see any of the shading or details on the skin without zooming in.  None of the shading on the dress is visible either except the darkest lines.  Try to start simple.  Just choose 3 colors for each thing: 1 for the non shadow part, 1 for the shadow, and 1 for the outline.  You should be able to put these three colors next to each other, squint, and still easily distinguish the value steps.

The colors for the dress are a little bright.  Try lowering the saturation, and also try some hue shifting to make it more interesting.  The means shifting the hue in one diretion for the lights and in the other direction for the shadows.  The shift doesnt need to be that extreme but even a subtle amount will make it more interesting.

As for how to draw the dress, look up references if youre having problems.  Heres 2 I found that are similar to what you want:

General Discussion / Re: NEW CLUSTER STUDY THREAD!
« on: December 18, 2013, 09:00:56 pm »
glad I decided to check pixelation before I went back to work on my commissions.  Ill try to apply this practice to my work right now, though I wont be posting the result since its part of my work.  Anyways Ill look foreward to seeing the discussion in this thread.

EDIT: ok after cleaning up 2 frames of my sprite, the areas I find difficult to do this are outlines, and AA.  Outlines because of areas with 45 degree angles.  Even though 45 degree connections where allowed, but I tried to find other solutions.  And AA where sometimes you just want 1 pixel of AA like near a corner.

I cant tell if hes supposed to be holding swords or what.  To me it looks like he has those cane things like this: http://reachingforthestars.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/boy-with-CP-canes1.jpg
part of the reason being that he moves both arms together at the same time like you would with crutches rather than moving one arm foreward while the other goes back.

the arms are a bit wierd, try bending the elbows.
Somethings been bothering me about the frames when her foot hits the ground too.  Looking at the individual frames, I think on the second frame you ought to lower the foot that is about to contact with the ground, cause its at the same height as the previous frame.

ya AA can help.  Though the AA in my example isnt that great so dont follow it too closely.

I think maybe youre trying to imply too much detail than you can fit at that size.  It might be better to just keep things simple.  something like this
