General Discussion / Scanner owners I need advice!
« on: July 10, 2011, 05:30:27 am »
Hey there!

So I'm doing some shopping and finally decided to try and look for a scanner to buy. So I've settled on a Hand-Held scanner as the best option for me. I was wanting to know from you guys, is what do you use and what has worked out best for you. I thought it'd be best to ask the experts so what do you guys reccommend?

Thanks in advance!

General Discussion / I want to see your paper stuff
« on: June 09, 2011, 07:47:04 pm »
So, recently, I've been contacted by an artist or two wanting to work with me on a game. The first guy had to drop me because of other projects, but I was okay with that. The second contacted me through newgrounds. Now, naturally I wanted to see a portfolio or something so I looked through his submissions. They weren't bad really. But I wanted to check on something. I asked to see if he could send me something from his sketches, real life stuff. At first he didn't know what I was talking about, but after I made it clear, he said he'd try even though I was feeling that they didn't look good. (even though I assured him that it would look better then mine) That was a week ago. I sent him a pm just now but I don't think I'll get an answer back.

So, my question here, is, why? If I have the good fortune of being contacted by another artist wanting to work with me, I would very much like the best argument that I can make for it without sounding like a total d-*. The reasoning I'm currently going with is one that I've been told before: I want to see if you have the fundamentals down. Is that being too rude or something? What else should I ask look for?  Does it matter if it's paid/unpaid? Shouldn't right?

Edit: Oh hey, I got a pm back!

General Discussion / Kill the Unpaid Jobs Board
« on: February 08, 2011, 04:19:15 am »
Honestly, why is there one even on the site? No one is going to work for free from here. I would say 99.9 percent of the threads have 0 replies and the ones that do are fairly rare. So, because of the unlikelihood of anyone working for free, I think that it should be removed. Unless of course it's a clever way of not cluttering up the paid jobs thread. And a simple fix would be to delete unpaid jobs outright from the thread. Since no one is going to work for free. That's just my reasoning. What do you think?

Variance is something I do have trouble with. I'll try to add a little bit more to my next few tracks. For programs I just use FLS 8 demo. I dunno much about sound banks though, and I won't be using those other apps. I like free stuff. And anvilstudio for the win! That was one of the first music programs I used. FL is more of a real sound to me though. Thanks for taking a listen. Appreciate it. :)

Why are all your pictures so small?

Because I always would like to pixel them. Having a sprite the size of a page would be a rather very large sprite. These are easily at least 200 pixels plus in size both ways.

@Redshrike: I thought about doing that. I really did. When I went looking though, I couldn't find anything that I liked. Granted, I didn't look very long because I didn't have a lot of time, but still, I did look. Besids, I still don't think I'd get used to drawing without lines. So I'd probably have to slip a lined paper over/under a page or something like that. And I don't have classes. I use those notebooks to write down game development ideas as well.

Hey guys thanks! I am always unsure about the feet. I have seen many styles that have the feet offset, and also that have the feet straight in line. Which one do I use? Here's a few more:

Admittedly a Dragon Quest 9 martial artist. Before you think it, I'm sure a trace would look much, much better. I am not good with clothes at all. And I don't know wether or not to add, or where to add texture on muscles and arms. (Even though I DO have a tutorial on the subject, I'm just not sure where for every angle.) Again, all of these will have no neck. Not sure how to add it in.

The arms bother me here. They both don't have the same likeness to them. So they're not correct physically. I also don't know whether or not to leave them as seperate shapes or connect them to the chest. Also hands and guns. I suck at both. He's supposed to be wearing Flip-Flops so that's why his ankles are shown. That line above his ankle is supposed to be a sock line.

This is actually my second female sketch attempt. The page ripped where I was re-re-re-drawing the first one's face, so I made this one. Again, trying another salute. I have a manga book that I was trying to take tips from. Smaller legs, thinner arms, thick hips, small shoulders, etc. Again, one arm is bigger then the other. What's a good way to check proportions? Head size? Or is that in my loomis books  somewhere and I forgot about it, again. Feet and hands are killing me.

Any CnC?

So, about four weeks or so ago I started doing some drawing. I was tying to do one or so every two or three days. Then two weeks ago vacation happened and I didn't do any drawing. However, I was able to snag a video of one before I left and here it is:

I didn't think to look for a reference for this one. I can't do clothes folds for squat. I hate working on the face because I think I got it right and then I think twice or I mess it up working on something else. The leg on the left side is a bit short. I think my arm  structure is off. Oh yeah, and my hands suck. The bear on the right was done quick and just for fun. And also for a bit of shoe practice. I was going for a slight star trek feel and flopped it. I'll post the rest later.

Any CnC?

"I like the idea, xhunter, I hope more participate."

Heh, so do I!

@Mathias: I don't think I've seen that yet.

@Jakten: Those are cool. I like to get a lot of detail into my chacters as possible. But I don't know how big to draw them based on how big I want the sprite to be. Especially since everything it'd be redone on the computer anyway and I don't want to give myself a chunk load of work to do.

Like Mathias said. Anyone else next?

(hopefully I can get a few snapshots of mine and start a low res thread going. I was actually hoping to get more done but what can you do?)

General Discussion / Sketches anyone?

Pypebros did something rather rather intriguing on a thread.

He posted part of his sketch to sprite process. Since I'm doing some of my own sketches to practice, I thought of a neat idea.

Why don't people post images of sketches they've drawn on paper first. And then what the finished piece looks like afterwards as a sprite!

I think it'd be a neat learning experience at least.

Anyone dare to take a bite?
