Pixel Art / Eggplant Wizard

Hello!

(I'm still working on the Lynch girl, just so you know ;D).

My first attempt:

I'm working on this sprite in order to practice giving volume to shapes. I would really appreciate some input in that regard.  :y: I'm not looking for something which is identical to the reference, just good volume.

Pixel Art / Lynch dancing girl

Hello guys,

I'd like to do an animation of the girl in Mulholland drive dancing.

I'd essentially to get a third version which will be more readable so that I can start animating it.

If you provide criticism I will do my best to put it into practice.

Thank you for reading,

Z.

Pixel Art / Sort-of Cannibal Panda
« on: July 04, 2014, 12:41:34 pm »
Alright, so...!

For the last secret santa, I did this Panda:

Now it was so bad that it knocked the Earth out of balance and tempered with the cosmic rays of the multiverse which had the unfortunate effect of voiding basic internationally recognized politeness as I not only received no thanks for it but it wasn't even so much as acknowledged.  :o  :D (humor).

So... this being said, I think part of the problem is how I portrayed the fur as individual pixels like that.

Could you rip it up so that I can redo it and hopefully design a worthy gift this time around  :'(.

P.S.: Special thanks to PPD who helped me out with this at the time of its original design (the horror he's seen in the first version I tell ya).

Pixel Art / Tentacle Perspective Conundrum
« on: June 03, 2014, 11:19:08 am »
Hello guys!

I'm trying to sprite a walking tentacle (inspiration: Day of the Tentacle) for a game. I'm having a really hard time with the ''RPG'' perspective. I've done 4 different attempts:

I always end up spriting them from a full front perspective when it should be ''3/4'' if that makes any sense.

I would really appreciate your help with this!!!  :y: :y:

Hello guys!

I'm practicing bending shapes while animating and well... I find it difficult. Very.

This isn't finished of course but any sort of feedback would be über ultra mega cool in the zone man.  :y:

Thank ye,

Z.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Slimer
« on: March 25, 2014, 07:07:43 pm »
Hello guys! :)

This once again is for a contest. As usual, I would like some feedback on what I've done so far (especially ideas about the folds of skin). It's Slimer from Ghost Buster.

Thank you!

I would like some input as to how to improve this.

The reference is this one:

I will then proceed to animate it flying.

General Discussion / Pixel Art Jobs (and salary)
« on: January 27, 2014, 06:52:12 pm »
Hello guys,

I realize this was discussed before but the thread goes back to 2007 so I figure might as well create a new thread instead of reviving a thread which is 7 years old...

I would like some clear guidelines regarding paid jobs. I'm reading on the net but I can't find anything clear about this. Whenever I apply for a job, the dev' will ask how much I want but since I have no reference point, I end up never knowing what to say and it's a bit frustrating.

I realize it's a case by case basis and it will vary and blah blah blah but surely there are some general guidelines?

For instance, how much do you charge when creating something and animating it? Do you consider the time it took you or the amount of frames or the size of the sprite?

In other words, I'd like to hear from people who do this for a living so that I can get some solid(ish) references whenever I have to negotiate a fee with a customer.

Also, can I upload art done for a game in my gallery (provided I mention that I don't "own" it anymore)? Is there a legal stance about this or is it just something you need to discuss every time with the customer.

Also, how often do you ask to be paid? Every time or after x amount of time or?

So you see, a lot of questions I can't find any answers for. I'm really looking for different answers here so that I can infer some sort of guidelines by comparing what comes back the most often in the various answers and thus know how to handle myself better when it comes to dealing with fees.

Thank you in advance.  ;D

Pixel Art / Goob running after his own bone.

Heya! Been a while (I was waiting for my other threads to go down the page a bit so that it doesn't seem like I'm spamming).

I'd like some feedback to improve the bone throwing motion here:

Thank you, I'll put your comments into practice, as usual,  :y:.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Another portrait (nudity)
« on: December 30, 2013, 03:24:46 pm »
Hello guys,

So I'm once again trying my hand at working on a portrait. I really want to take the opportunity to learn as much as possible this time around.

Reference (nudity):
http://img10.imagefra.me/i5ct/freemind/l3yi_a7e_u5vq6.jpg

Here's the progression so far:

My questions are the following:

1. In this case, is the darker area broad enough to warrant an outline? This is one thing which I struggle with. I want to master volumes without resorting to shortcuts like lines which are not very realistic...

2. When talking about values, I'm reading this book about acrylic painting.

In the example above, the darkest area (the color with the most black) is the area where light reaches the least. Then, there's a gradation up to the foread where light reaches the most (area where the color is mixed with the most white). Do I understand this right? Of course, if the color of the light isn't "white" it would affect the colors of the face differently.

3. If I look at the picture of the face, my eye can’t pick up a lot of the bone structure underneath the skin. For instance, I can barely make out the bone ridge.

Also, is it me of is her mandibular exceptionally narrow?

4. Also, to my eyes, the area on her abdomen right above her breasts is sort of uniform in color. I'm having a hard time giving this area more volume.

I hope we can have a discussion about this so I can progress some more.

Thanks!  :y:
