First Pixel Art *Structure c+c welcome*

on: October 27, 2008, 02:47:56 pm

My first attempt at a pixel art. The background is a generic brick pattern and the door I made from scratch as well as the graffiti and the spray can.

Most of my work is with micro-heroes but I wanted to move on to something more involved. Mainly, sprite and pixel work with some animation if I can get the hang of it.

c+c and any tips welcome. Scale is something I'm worried about but I think I need to find a sprite to scale it too first.

You need to consider your light source. The bricks, door, and window all appear to be lit from completely different directions.

Thank you I will get working that. Maybe add a lamp to make things easier.

EDIT:

I added a light source and put in an animation to see how it looks.

An Attempt at Anatomy in pixels.

Please rip it to shreds

I know it needs work but I've been staring at the screen for so long I'm seeing pixels everywhere.

3 days between posts, does that count as a double?

I was trying to show that the chest was higher than the stomach. I'll adjust the shading.

That's some nasty pillowshading, bro. Try to shade with a defined light source in mind instead of just slapping dark colors around the outlines.

I want to get the anatomy down first before I work on shading. Any thoughts on the anatomy?

Hope I'm not trodding on any toes by cross-referencing, but myself and another sentient being recently made our points on the definition of anatomy and where artists should be starting in this never-ending quest.

Those pictures and words can be found here (Ctrl-F and type in "Saboteur" to find the beginning of the anatomy rants):

Start with structure, don't worry about muscles till you can build the structure that the muscles sit on.

Thank you, Willows. I was thinking that it would be a good idea to build it up from a skeleton but decided to jump ahead. Darn that little voice in my head.

I'll get to work on it.

  • I feel... Saturated to some degree, out of tone.

I made a small edit to the Torso and Face to point you in the right direction.

I think you need to work on your light sources and anatomy.
FYI, DITCH THE PILLOW SHADING, IT WILL GET YOU NOWHERE.

Thank you, that does help. I'm working on a skeleton right now, I want to be able to make my own people instead of having modify sprites.

Here's my attempt at structure:
