Pixel Art / Re: WIP Platfmormer Mockup thingy
« on: December 26, 2006, 02:53:10 pm »
It's rather hard to make out any detail on the character's face and the black on the legs looks like part of the background, maybe replace that with a dark red?

The ground looks very good, but I would think a programmer if actually making this a game wouldn't want to waste so much of the picture with a dark grey fill that isn't a gameplay element. I'm suggesting to add some texture or move the whole view down some.

The 'trees' look good, but the foremost one loses all lightsourcing at the top. It also looks somewhat faceted on the leftmost bit of its main trunk. Try using more of the colors in your palette to smooth that out.

The sky is okay, but you should use either more dither patterns or at least use the ones you have all the way. Currently you go from 25% dither to 50% dither to 100% and repeat that, try a 25-50-75-100 pattern of dithers.

The building looks great so far, and no real crits there, but I just wanted to say it'll look awesome with some more detail.

Isn't your 'great secret' on your PJ profile? You should be more careful with secrets. :P

If you don't want to change that color, could you change the black to a darkish red-orange and the color on the other side to a bit more of a purple? Do it for the sake of the ramp, pity the poor ramp.

I really like the pseudohuman musculature you've got going in a lot of your pieces and this is no exception, but I think it could do with a larger head or maybe even a totally inhuman one.

I think the version with leaves is ace. I can't find even an opportunity for nitpicking there. But I have to agree about the leafless one; trees usually branch into two or three after the top of the trunk (I've seen four happen only once and it looked so wild it wouldn't make a good subject for art unless that's a focus of the peice), then each of these limbs branches out several times and ends in twigs, the most numerous structure. I notice that you don't seem to have enough of these twigs or splits in general; the branches just shrink like an animal's tail instead of decreasing in size when splitting as is shown in real trees.

Another thing: what would make a tree lose all its leaves but leave nice green grass intact below? Either kill the grass or cover some of it in fallen leaves for some more realism.

I think your text would do well with some aa, as would the shovel handle. Aside from that, not really any problems I see. If someone gave me a Christmas card with that on it, I'd probably feel as least a bit warm and fuzzy inside that someone would make a piece of art just to give it to me on a Christmas card.

What strikes me as odd is the extremely dark shadow area in the upper middle of the chest. This, along with the dark shadow under his left (pectoral?) muscle makes it look like he's a woman and serves only to confuse the viewer. I like his right arm's dithering, though. Very nice there. Unfortunately, as you transition into the hand on that arm, you don't increase size and his hand looks like it was mutilated or is a bith defect.

I think the nose could benefit from using the BG color in the snot so it doesn't look like a mushroom so much as it does now. The N is good, but I think you should fix the hue shifting so it goes with the color ramp better. You go:
Light Yellow
Medium/light red
Medium Blue
Dark Red/maroon

Try something more like:

Light Yellow
Medium/light Red
Medium Magenta
Dark blue

I like the concept, but you might want to go with spots that only darken by one color so you can use the next darkest to show shadows. The lack of shadows right now is what kills this piece by making it look flat instead of puffy and 3d like it should. I really like the idea and the beak is near flawless.

Mine originated from "Monkey 'o Doom" on Pixel Joint. That username came from my love of climbing (especially trees), my appetite for fruit, and general discontent with humanity.
