i thought it was a bit suspicious you didnt say "this is turk (donald faison) from scrubs" or something.. so I did a quick google image search of him and found the reference.

tracing, definetly.. could go so far to say you just tweaked the brightness, contrast and colours, then did some quick dithering  :-\

hey

I don't want to be harsh on you or anything, for I think you do not know better. I just wanted to let you know that the uproar of sorts is due to that I think (and maybe others) there is no skill, far less effort, nor proper art involved in following/performing a few image processing functions ;).

Well are you willing to learn?  You show obvious effort trying to make something that resembles what you think is pixel art.......but you're methods aren't spot on.  So maybe you could try out the actual methods of producing pixel art; it appears as if you already have dithering down.  Everybody here is more than willing to help.

Just keep the critics happy and you'll be a hardcore pixeller in no time ;)

and where the hell is the bearded man?

He doesnt have "dithering down".  He color reduced a blue version of the photo - thats why it looks so messy and ugly.

i like how you didnt use the actual image, but the google preview :P

really though i dont want to insult you man.  bitching out n00bs isnt as fun as it sounds.

to clarify:

pixel art is about purposeful manipulation of individual pixels to create an image.  filters like color reduction, auto-aa, auto-rotation, auto-scale, etc, are not allowed and most of the time produce results that dont look nearly as good as hand-pixeled work

as an example, i used your reference to pixel a quick portrait:

this portrait is ass-crap-bad for an infinite number of reasons, however, it's not traced.  in fact, its not even in the same pose really.  this kind of thing builds skills (well, it would if you put more work into it than the 5 minutes i put in), and it's authentic to you anr your personal skills.  this also is the kind of thing that people will help you with on this forum.  we cant tell you how to hit the filter button better, but we can tell you how to make better art.

@djork: what?
A mistake is a mistake.
The same mistake twice is a bad habit.
The same mistake three or more times is a motif.

I have top say that my suspicious nature has me leaning toward djork's conclusion. The tone of the initial post (with its excessive number of eye-roll emoticons, the "omfg, I found this picture..." bit, followed by a winky guy), the fact that he chose the preview of the first image that comes up on a google image search, the ridiculously overdone response to TakaM.'s post (again, note the emoticon abuse and the fact that there's no denial whatsoever; hardly common among 'serious' color reducers), and the fact that there have been no posts since leads me to believe that this is, like, a joke from one of the regulars (making a stab at reducers), a much-more-subtle-than-usual troll post, or... something.

If not, sincere apologies to pixel_pixie (but not too sincere, 'cause the whole reduction thing is self defeating and, quite frankly, just stupid). In any event, something seems a bit of here...

Maybe I'm just paranoid.
