General Discussion / Re: Thoughts on Pixels and Dots. Video

Wow guys, really disappointing behavior here.

!yus! !yus! !yus!

Helm, to be fair to Alex, it's totally inappropriate for you to make statements as to his metal health or stability. If you really think Alex is in a vulnerable state of mind or that he has a broken self, take it up with him personally, keep it to yourself, or talk to your cat about it. But don't post stuff like that here for the world to see. That's ass.

Alex, Helm was rude and I think you trolled defensively.

We've gone waaaay off topic from "Thoughts on Pixels and Dots". You guys are two of my favorite pixel artists. These walls of text are just masturbatorial. Stop it.

!yus! !yus! !yus!

As for the video, Alex, I think you should step back and listen to the constructive critique you've gotten. We are pretty good at that here. Take the suggestions to heart and see if you can't improve as a speaker and presenter.

I agree that you need more preparation and structure. Do a cold run, preferably in front of a friend so they can ask questions and give you feedback. Even holding some index cards during your presentation might help. You tend to get lost during transitions, lots of 'uh's and 'kind of like's. I feel like your stream-of-conscious approach is hurting your actual message.

I don't think it's the cable, I'm using a newer composite cable.

It is the cable. Composite cables such as RCA and SCART mix the color components and luminance into a noisy mess. Stuff like HDMI and component cables use separate channels for each color and another for luminance, thus no noise.

On a lot of older consoles, the only way to get a component signal is to open the case and start soldering the motherboard. On some consoles it's just impossible because the guts are hardwired to generate a component signal.

From what I understand, SCART cables can output component and RGB signals. RGB signals aren't as good as genuine YPbPr composite, more like S-Video. I'm not European so I can neither confirm nor deny this.

For those of you who remember Madgarden, he has an even bigger dump of stuff from Pixelation's past. I'm not going to link to it because it's not my bandwidth that would suffer, but I will say if you happened to type something along the lines of "madgarden pixelation" into a search engine, you would probably find it pretty quickly. He had a lot of my pixel art that I thought was lost forever.

Do him a favor and do what I did, host any images you find on your own server or use a free upload service, instead of direct linking.

Someone (I can't remember who) was making a game called Nun 'N Gun. I wanted it to be made so bad. Still do.

Hahah, yeah, 3/4th of that is good old st0ven's works. He really hit the books and took his art to another level.

This isn't by st0ven, it's mine!

I remember you made this:

And I made this:

I also remember I was gonna make an all ninja fighting game. Maybe I should revisit the concept...

I've managed to be spoiler free so far, so if anybody can tell me some more things I can expect to suck without singling out the elements I'd apreciate it, so I can become as disappointed as posible before I enter the theater, and I get to enjoy the visuals atleast as much as one could.

The biggest problem is that the movie was coauthored by Damon Lindelof. The same gripes that Lost fans have with the writing to Lost, Alien fans will have with the writing to Prometheus.

Plots sprout out and are never resolved, or are promptly resolved without any emotional resonance. Characters are one-dimensional and their actions are idiotic. Personalities never emerge. No one is likable. Something is very wrong when an android is the most fleshed out and believable character in a movie. The movie wasn't character based like it's predecessors. People only exist to move the plot along.

Really, this movie was sabotaged by a bad screenplay. As Helm said, the actors did great. Ridley Scott is one of the better directors alive today. The production was top notch, but you can't polish a turd.

Well, Prometheus sure was disappointing.

General Discussion / Re: How to calibrate your monitor?
« on: June 03, 2012, 09:57:29 pm »
There is equipment for color/gamma syncing display, but such things cost hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars. !yus!

Unless your laptop and monitor are made by the same company, and the same manufacturer, and the same year, and the same display technology, there are going to be differences.

My suggestion is to be patient, and tweak while you are working. Over a span of a couple of weeks, I set my laptop and monitor as close as possible. Tweak it during the day, then at night-time tweak it some more. Eventually your need to tweak will stop, and you'll be good to go.

Also, having different looking displays can serve as a basic sanity check that your art will be readable on other people's displays.

Pixel Art / Re: Tactical RPG sprites
« on: May 23, 2012, 10:43:23 pm »
Suggestion: drop the bottom right facing frame and flip the left facing frame in game. Every sprited based tactical RPG I've played does this. It saves a ton of work.

I like the style, it's like halfway between 8-bit with black outlines and 16-bit with more shades. :y:

Good stuff here. Seems like you could generate normal maps from the lightness values of the sprites. They'll probably still need some hand tweaking, but it should still speed up the process.
