Pixel Art / Re: Mario
« on: November 26, 2006, 08:50:28 pm »
Wait
what?

He's talking about the Mario on the left most frame and yes I do agree his edit looks better. Nose might be a little too red and distracting in the edit though. I'd just tone it down and it should look great. Also the M on the hat is dying to have some slight AA imo.

I have another thought, maybe instead of posting a ton of new threads asking for people to animate for you, you could post them in one thread and probably get a free animation program.

You can also create "custom brushes" in Paint simply by drawing something, selecting it, and holding shift before to start to drag it around (got to make sure you have the selection on the bottom setting, the one with transparency).

Pixel Art / Re: Mushroom

Well, I think that looks quite nice for what it is. It doesn't really do much for me on its own. I mean it's a mushroom and that's about it. So what you could do is maybe give it a background and develop it into a scene of some sorts, or perhaps give it a bit of a magical feel by adding some glowing parts of sparkling to it. I guess another option would be give it a face and such to make it a little more interesting.

I might also suggest giving it a bit of a shadow under the mushroom's cap. The light seems to be coming from the top left so you'd probably have a bit of a diagonal shadow ( \ ). Looks good so far just try to develop it a bit more to add interest.

Well I'll be honest, I think it needs a lot of work. Your lines are rough, your colors don't really seem to go together that well and it doesn't look very mushroom-like.

Because I'd rather not describe every little thing I see wrong I made an edit so you can get a fresh look on how you could go about it.

I believe you're looking for these:

I got a bunch more of his stuff and Ironshanks stuff saved too but if Iron's still around then he might as well post (unless it's too old that he doesn't have it).

I have to admit I grew up on MS Paint. From Windows 3.1 to Windows XP. I'm not going to lie and say it's the most efficient program but the job can get done just the same as it can in other programs save for animation and proper color indexing. You can create any picture in that program as in another it's just a matter of why would you want to.

At the end of the day we are pixel artists though. Not like we're choosing the easiest way to get stuff done. I mean why anti-alias pixel by pixel when Photoshop can do it? Well for one it's because we can (also some of the AA algorithms out there are a bit sketchy). But it's a tedious task either way laying out stuff pixel by pixel so why not use Paint?

I'm going give it a 5 because it's both a good starting point but also horrible for efficiency.

I'm assuming the piece is not yet finished. Great work so far by the way but the neck is bothering me. There is something off about the way you shaded and shaped the neck. I think Helm did a pretty nice neck edit intially but I'd like to definitely see some dithering on the neck yet to match the texture and style of the rest of the face. Glad to see you taking the time to get this right  :y:

I would suggest cleaning up and refining your lineart before adding color. I'm also not sure there's any reason to write "metal-crate" on a crate. Why not just make it looks metal and we'll figure it out from there? I'm a little confused what's going on with the mouth area and lack of nose. Looks a bit like a puppet mouth.

Try working out the volume of the shapes and lighting without dithering and once it looks good maybe experiment with dithering but usually dithering would be a skill you'd pick up after some more of the basic ones. It's a neat concept you have there though.

I usually just sit back and watch but I have joined in a few in the past. I remember specifically the Kenneth style portrait one. Oh who was the guy in the 5th row, 3rd from the right in the picture Dr Derek's posted? Wasn't his name like Mr H or something? I seem to remember a lot of popularity with that guy or his art for some time. I wish someone still had that stuff kicking around.

[edit]
Ok I looked around a bit more and found I had some of the Mr. H pieces that Pep had made. Hope it's ok if I post these Pep.

Could have sworn there was more out there.

Well I did a little edit myself here. Tried to touch up some of the AA and edges, lighting and played a bit with the colors. I gave the picture a pallette as you didn't really seem to have one. I think it had 27 colors which I'm sure you could reduce if you wanted because there was quite a subtle ramp on the "gray".

Anyhow I liked the character and thought you did a pretty good job so here's my edit...
