Pixel Art / Fire elf revamp x3
« on: May 05, 2007, 07:30:15 pm »
Alright so one of my oldest pixel art pieces was this fire elf character I made up. Had come up with some ideas and all for this race of elves. Later on down the line after honing in some more pixel skills I redid the sprite again trying to bring out some facial features and show my improved skill. The second time rolled around and I figured why not revamp the piece again. Looked better and at the time was probably pretty decent for me.

One thing all these pieces were lacking was an interesting and thought out light source and suffered from mirroring more or less. So that's where the third revamp and fourth piece came in. Just finished this one and tried to include a strong light source and some palette tweaks. Any comments or edits are welcome on improving this piece or thoughts on the progress over the years.

Here they are in order from earliest to latest:

I think the sword design is interesting, though not completely unlike something I've seen before.
As for your two versions there I'm not sure which one I prefer. The black outline is killing the piece in the first but the lack of outline (and contrast) in the second is not helping either. I would suggest a mix between the two. An outline that lightens with the lighting perhaps.

Another thing that is kind of lost in the pic is the little ornament-esque stuff coming down from the hilt onto the blade. Just is hard to read.

Anyhow here's an edit I did trying to get some more contrast and lighting out of the lines and smoothing them out. I hope it is of some help.

Well to be honest this piece still looks like a sketch. Everything seems to rough and jaggy.

I'd suggest you loose the AA for now and work more on your color ramps and blocking in volumes. The piece lacks depth and the colors really seem a bit boring. Face has no contrast really in itself but then you have some dark jaggy lines like the lines like the eyes  that need some buffering between them and the rest of the skin. Also the mouth and nose and details seem to be in need of a little smoothing. Shirt looks random the lines and has no buffering. Over use of black in the piece. Your spectral highlights seem very random with the gaps between them. Almost like some kind of noise.

I'd suggest just taking your time to polish this up, look at some other examples and maybe someone will help you out with an edit.

As far as references go, why not just do some adjustments on your photo and use that as a reference?

It looks pretty good so far. As with Snippa I prefer the second last one most. Just keep working at it and use your reference strongly and I'm sure it'll turn out great. Some dither (if the shades are close enough) might help with smoother transitions but only worry about this once your volumes are blocked out and you're detailing.

I think what you have so far is lacking volume (as has been pointed out) and looks messy. Lots of, what seem to be, random pixels going on in the stomach area.

Not sure if you wanted a straight on view or slightly top down but right now it looks fairly straight on while the shadow suggests a bit more top down then is shown now.

Colors are also a bit boring. Try mixing it up and adding some other hues/tints in there.

Did an edit which is mostly a recolor of the lines to show you some ideas. Hope it helps.

I do believe that "circle in 45" are the same as circles in a non-skewed projection. Do a bit of Googleing for axonometric or planometric and circles and you'll find they seem to claim it's just a regular circle.

Am I the only one who doesn't think those are "45 degree lines" per say and are meant to be part of a more curved square look? I wouldn't AA them like tacky did necessarily and specially if it's to be a sprite for a game but I don't see the point in all the talk about 45 degree angles.

As for the sprite I think it looks simple but nice. I wouldn't mind seeing a bit of hue shift and more contrast.

Thanks. I ask because I'd be interested in doing something like Kenneth's and your work as well, but I'm not exactly willing to shell out money for such a high-end application (+ huge learning process?) if I only want to be able to experiment with low poly models and stuff, heh.  ;)

I think Kenneth uses 3DS Max and there used to be a free version of it around called GMax that I'm sure has all the feature you'd need for something like this. Apparently Autodesk doesn't offer it anymore but I found it here > http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax

As for the picture I think it looks really quite well done and well.... "cute". I'm curious to see a video of someone modeling one of these low poly pixel models.

Does anyone here know of any pictorial books on medieval or renaissance type armor and/or clothes? I'm looking for a book full of illustrations on the various types of old armors that would be used with swords and the like. If anyone knows of any that'd be great.

Looks fairly basic but quite usable. I've been thinking about how nice it'd be to have an art program on my DS for a while already. Perhaps there's a homebrew one out there or we could convince some programmers to make us one.
