General Discussion / Making a living?
« on: July 26, 2009, 06:45:10 pm »
Hey guys!

I was just wondering how many of you can actually make a living doing pixel work for games (or if that's even possible at all).

I ask this because I've just started pixeling in my spare time (which, at the moment, I have more of than I'd like) and I quite like it. I never thought of this being a possible new source of income for me. Who knows, maybe one day...?

In the meantime, I'm interested to hear your side of the story!

@stOven: I think you're right! That background really does help me make some choices; thanx!  ;D

And about the legs: I think you guys are right about adding 1 pixel to them. I can already forsee some difficulties right now, so 2 pixels it is!

(just a sidenote: I really really really appreciate your comments & edits! It's helping along so well, I kinda miss this kind of feedback with my regular job. Thanx again! )

Well, I spent some more time on the martian creatures; added 1 more color to their palett so I could smouth out the gradient a bit more.

Here's the result:

I'm quite pleased with how the floating-airbag-jellyfish-creature turned out. Check them veins!  :D
And I think the winged creatures' highlights might be a bit TOO smooth now. Not sure yet. I might have another look at them tomorrow.

So... what do you guys think?  ::)

I disagree with Souly. It's not really consistent with the already established lighting and it is by no means an outline, it's rim lighting.

colored outlines, values have been pushed, and broke up the boring geometry. technically, I shouldn't have shrouded the right leg cus the lightsourse is not direct left, but more pulled towards the viewer on the z axis, but it helps the readability.

er, how does it move?

Thanx for your input Atnas!
As for the moving/walking: I'm thinking crab-like. So just left<>right on those 2 spiny legs.

And about the outlines: This is for the same game idea as a previous post of mine (http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=8852.0) in which I also use 1 color for the outlines. So I'd like to keep it as consistent as possibe. But here with the shiny metal I'd like the metal texture to jump out a bit more, somehow, but still keep in line (no pun intended) with the established look.

So... erhm... guess I got some work to do  :hehe:

thanx guys!
yeah, I was actually playing around with some highlights on the outline. But Souly's graphics look a lot better than the ones I had :P
I'll post something soon!

oops! Forgot to introduce myself  :-[

Anyway, my name is Erwin and I'm pretty new to serious pixeling. I did do some sprites & game graphics (for fun) many years back. But that wasen't exactly serious work. And since I'm a very serious person, I don't think that work counted much. So I'm hoping to learn the finer details of the craft here. I have some ideas for small games that, at this point, I want them to be more than just ideas.

Aside from this I do web/graphic/motion graphic design and my main passion is telling stories in the shape of comics!

Cheers from rainy Holland!

hi guys,

so I'm working on this little game idea that also features these retro style robots, walking across the surface of Mars.
The left batch is the default metal. And on the right I made the highlights slightly red, because of Mars' surface color.

I'm trying to get their smooth metal texture right, as I'll also be making some large spaceships in the same style.
And since they'll have much larger smooth metal surfaces, I'd like to get the grading really really goodlooking.

So... what do you think? C&C is more than welcome!

hey guys!

Thought I'd post a 'little' update; I think I'm getting the hang of it  ;)
You can see 'crocodile lady' and her fullgrown offspring, with their larval stage counterparts underneath them. Also I started working on some martian lifeforms that will be flying around in the game.

The highlights look a lot better now with the extra colors. The 'crocodile lady' and the larvae have about 7 colors for the fleshy parts. I kept their colors also somewhat less lively than the larger creatures, which have 9 colors for their outer skin.

Oh, and the martian flying creatures have a limited 6 colorpalett for their skin.

So... what do you think?  ::)
