Pixel Art / Re: First(ish) attempt at pixel art

Honestly I'd say you got it spot on. It does look a bit desaturated, but that makes it look more like proper hair since hair is rarely that vibrant without product in. The color choices used  give it a sort of storybook illustration feel.
The only real criticism I got on the shading is that you didn't seem to factor in his browline, but that can work as a stylistic choice here with how simplified the face is.

He's kind of twitchy, try to re-align the frames so he stays mostly level. with himself. The arm and lantern are already fine, but there's a lot of very noticeable jitter on everything left of the shoulder.

I was actually about to suggest much the same as Infinity!
I added some stuff to this to make it more visually interesting, like a sidewalk and grass. I was going for a sort of "torn out of the earth" look too, so some iron bars holding up dessicated chunks of sidewalk felt like a good addition for that.
I got kind of lazy on the rocky bits below, but hopefully what I was doing still gives you some ideas!

He's tilting pretty far back, how is he not falling down?

I'm of the EXACT opposite opinion, having learned to draw in pixels before properly learning to draw at normal resolutions.
It is VERY important to get the base knowledge for how to draw down before you start going for specific stylization, as I've learned. The more aware you are of anatomy, the better you're able to succeed when you reduce and exaggerate it like cartoonistry and pixel art requires.

I highly recommend starting with the Andrew Loomis guides, Fun with a Pencil is an excellent starting point. If you google him, you'll probably find resources from him pretty fast.
I also recommend doing figure/gesture drawing, which is a practice technique that forces you to get fast and loose with your poses so everything is more fluid and dynamic. It's a great starting point for art practice, and there's several websites devoted to the practice, like my personal choise Quickposes.com which describes the reasons for doing it and HOW to do it better than I can here: http://www.quickposes.com/tutorials

Good luck, and stay on it! It's a long process, but not nearly as intimidating as that time investment or all the complaining us artist types would have you believe with the internet at our disposals.

It's pretty unclear. Just looks like a wisp of smoke. Some ethereal glowing and some eyes or a mouth might help it some.

Try something simplified and chunky. Earthbound might be good inspiration.

Nah, makes her legs look like matchsticks. That third variant is getting close though, try refining it some.

Very nice! I'd add a bamboo slope roof to that stand, give it a tropical look. Always a classic, and always guaudy in the endearing Vegas sorta way.

My quick take on it.

That kinda looks like her legs are facing the camera and her torso up is facing right. Not impossible, but it's a slightly uncomfortable position I think
