Bison Wip

on: May 30, 2015, 08:06:56 pm
Working on a bison which I will be animating a run cycle for. Though I would see if anybody has time for some feedback on it first though as I am sure there is plenty that can be improved.
Thanks

I'm assuming the lighter brown across the shoulders is supposed to be the fluffier region of the bison. As it stands right now, it looks very smooth, which is jarring. It makes the hindquarters look as though they must be flat skin without any fur at all by comparison.

Tried to "fluffy" up the lighter hair.

Also worked on a skeleton bison which is going to be an obstacle in the game.

The three regions of the bison seem to have completely separate palettes.  To some extant bison actually do look like that, but I think that you've gone too far.  Right now it doesn't really feel like a unified animal.  The human head seems kind of strange also, as does the alternate coloring.

The ribcage and hindquarters all feel like they have very disconnected parts. It looks almost more like a muscle diagram than it does a cohesive whole. Each segment is way too separated from the others.

I'd say it's not bad at all!

But the dithering is a little to clean. It's meant to be fur, try a more randomized dithering, make the dark and light area blend in each other more progressively.

The grey lines in the "hair" of the animal is a little to well defined too, feels out of place. The animal looks really skiny, is it intended? If not, defined the ribcage a little less maybe.

Hey thanks for the feedback and suggestions. Here is my attempted implementations of the suggestions. Also tweaked the face shape around a bit though I must say they are strange looking creatures  :P

Well just an update, I scaled it down to 64x64 as 256 was taking to long. I am aware of lots of artifacts and flickers that this has caused and I will try to fix them if i get time but I want to continue with the game so I will leave it like this for now as don't want to spend more than 3 months on a single game at the moment.

The leg movement is really good!

I think the body movement could be larger! Like now it stays perfectly horizontal, but shoulders and hips should move up and down separate from each other!

Also, the amount of texture that you've chose doesn't make it ideal for animation..  :(

great animation as mentioned once u move the hips and shoulders its going to be nice  :y:

a bit late perhaps but the shading and dithering on ur larger image was bugging me so a rough paintover...

simple kill off the dithering its just plain ugly :P
instead u can clean up the kinds of lines i was suggesting to create fur texture.
i don't have an example handy but its simply done by disrupting the line between two bands of colour in a gradient (in this case to suggest fur).

btw was this ur reference?

Ahh that looks sweet. I will keep it in mind for next time but for now i will remove some stray pixels from the animation. Spot on, that is indeed my reference along with this one.

Design looks cool, really evocative. But the head/torso seems very jerky, like a wooden toy rattling around. Seems to jump suddenly between two positions, rather than smoothly moving between them.
